Overall most of the story elements are told in the animations on youtube, though it's not necessarily clear what order some of them happen in.
Gameplay wise you have options for a mode that's mostly don't starve classic that doesn't end unless all players are ghosts (survival), a mode that won't end and lets you res at the portal (endless), and a mode that puts you at character selection when you die if you aren't already attuned to a meat effigy/wearing a lifegiving amulet when you die (wilderness). I'm not sure if wilderness lets you attune to a touchstone like you can in don't starve singleplayer.
