Regarding the Tencent controversy
I decided to make this post as a way to help people know what is going on, and to avoid any kind of misinformation in any threads of such. So let's begin.

Edit: It turns out I am a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiot so some notes were changed.

As we know, Tencent recently adquired part of Klei, where they announced in their forums. The original post and the entire thread can be found here: https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/126355-studio-announcement/

Obviously people ain't happy with this decision, neither I am, however, most users here and on the Klei foruns are taking hasty conclusions about this situatuion, including but not limtated to: Stating that Klei supports massive genocide of minorities on China, because apparently they do now just because of Tencent.

It should be noted that we don't have too much informations about this and the future of Kleu, thus I must assume Bigfoot will update this on a FAQ, until then, EVERY assumption should be taken with a huge ammount of salt. Klei still owns the IPs they make as well as creative control, according to Bigfoot himself, although we have seen this story before, and there's a big possibility DST may be affected by Tencent's and the CCP's decisions, but again, we should not take hasty conclusions. Bigfoot mentioned that they took this decision due to monetary problems.

Tencent just owns 80% of Klei, and they chose this one due their help with Chinese market. Only time can tell what may happen. As I don't buy DST skins and haven't bought an item from Klei in over three years I don't plan on boycotting this game. If my data being collected was an issue, other american companies such as Google, Apple, and Microsoft already do that and also probably have better things to do with it. Just because Tencent is a monopoly that already owns a wide selection of games does not mean that this should be disregarded.

Boycotting this game wont do anything because regardless, Don't Starve Together will die either when Tencent consumes it's soul or when it's niche of "Uncompromising Survival" finally gets muddled up for good and it is remembered as yet another unremarkable "Play God" sandbox survival with every challenge waiting for you at a setpiece.

EDIT: You mfs are still overreacting.

Here's the external link to the original thread on offical forums, because the op here doesn't quite know how to grasp this and there are far better explenations and informative descriptions about this problem there than here.

Is selling 80% of your company a temporary situation?

I bet most of these people buy from companies that mistreat workers, underpay and more. People have a knack for putting on a front when really they just pick and choose while trying to seem morally good. Why I don't know, everyone is a bad person in some way or form.

People suffer all over the world, you can't just pick one bad thing to hate on and call it a day. If you want actual change then start with things you can make difference with instead of focusing on Klei where nothing you do matters.

My thoughts exactly. These type of people only take action when it's convenient.

They been with tencent for quite awhile they just haven't announced it this big other than a few forum posts saying their game is officially in tencent and the mobile game being related to tencent.
also the exclusive tencent skins.

Disgusting. And don't tell me that they starved out of money. This is respected company with overwhelming ratings on every game. Adored with many players. If you can't make money be this successful then the whole game business doesn't make sense. This was pure sellout just from pure greediness. You have right to sell your company I have right to not support you anymore.

Actually, the opposite is true. Like you say, there are so many bad things going on that it's impossible to avoid them all. The only times people have changed things is when they chose to focus on one issue more than the others.

IMO, people who choose one issue to focus on are much more moral than those who just give up and buy whatever because "every company has a bad side, anyway". Objectively speaking, participating in some evil isn't as bad as participating in anything that is evil.

Even if that's true, here's another objective truth:

taking action when it's convenient > not taking any action, even when it's convenient.

Just picking one thing and ignoring everything else makes you nothing but a fake. It doesn't matter whats worse, if you start your moral high ground then stick to it and do good all around. You guys are like Christians that go to church but as soon as they leave they hang up all the ideals and morals of the religion.

And you do realize that nothing you do will change what's happening. This is just a game, Tencent is going to do what they want regardless of your support for Klei or not so why let the great game and company go to waste? People make bad decisions but do you abandon your friends because of one bad decision?

After all these years of hard work and a great game people just abandon Klei like they did nothing for us.

What else do you guys do? Because if you just ignore one company and do nothing else then your stance has no merit.

You seem very angry about this. Did I misinterpret your point at all?

It seems like you are against a person boycotting a company unless they also boycott all other bad companies. Is this a fair summary of your point of view? Or am I missing something?

What I meant is that people are saying all kinds of things about their data going to China and bla bla bla but they still have accounts on every social media there is. Hell, they still have internet. Our data is out there regardless and I think everybody is totally free to boycott the game. The problem is that those people all of a sudden think of themselves as social justice fighters even though they never cared about those things before and never took real action to try and change what they are so against of.

As far as I know Klei still owns their IPs and have full creative freedom over the game.
Maybe I just lack the info but as far as I’m concerned it just seems like a typical buy out. Granted I’m going to watch carefully the updates and what Klei does with their games.

Either way I love Klei and their games, I’m not going to turn my head away from them, I’m going to carefully watch how they develop and try and help them should I think Tencent is doing anything a tad bit out of the ordinary.

Unlike apparently a lot of people, I’m wanting to try and help them rather then the game dying and the studio shutting down, after all seems a tad odd they had to sell 80%
