If I gift DST to a friend, where does the extra "gift copy" go?

I already own it and want to gift it, wondering who gets the second copy or if it gets lost

Second Giftable Copy
For those who do not see the second giftable copy.

When you buy the game, the first copy goes straight to your library (as it normally does), and the second giftable copy goes to your steam inventory.

You can get to your steam inventory by hovering your mouse over your name at the top of Steam and choosing "Inventory". It will be in the Steam tab.

Steam can be wonky ocassionally and it might not show up right away. If you exit steam completely and then start it up again, you may see it. You may even just have to wait a little bit, like I said, sometimes steam can be wonky.

If this doesn't happen and you do not get a copy in your library and in your inventory,you cancontact steam support. It will probably show up before too long though.

I think some of the slowness is because of the summer sale, that's we started to see more people complaining about not seeing the second copy. But you will definately get it, so hang tight. =)

I think my case is slightly different. I have owned the game for a while and now I want to buy it for a friend. So I'm gifting (purchasing) them DST from the storefront checkout, not from my inventory. I'm wondering what happens to the extra gift copy when I purchase the game for someone else using the steam store's "purchase this for a friend" feature

I see 3 possible scenarios:
1. I get the gift copy in my inventory
2. They get the gift copy in their inventory
3. Nobody gets the gift copy since it was a "purchase for a friend"
