New to Boating, Stuck?
How do boats, move? Can a person become stuck on a boat if they don't have an oar?

If you're close enough to another patch of land, I'd try jumping off. And if you don't have a mast (preferable with a steering wheel and anchor), Craft an oar to paddle your boat back to (relative?) Safety. Although getting stuck in the middle of the sea without absolutely anything in your inventory would have to be either intentional or require a lot of unlucky circumstances, if such a thing happens, I'm pretty sure you're just stuck for good and you'll have to wait until darkness kills you, unless you have materials for an oar which is really inexpensive. I'm not 100% sure about that though, haven't played this in a while now. :tongue_eol:
And to answer your first question, Boats move by being propelled either by your Oar or a Mast; Masts being faster and (relatively) hands free. since they fly quickly with wind, you need something to control it, that's where the steering wheel kit comes in: by using the steering wheel, you determine the rough path you want your mast to take your boat to. And last but definitely not least is the anchor kit, that's what's going to prevent you from crashing into land and sinking your boat. Keep in mind there's a little time before the anchor actually hits the ocean floor and starts stopping your boat, so maybe anchor your boat slightly sooner? Remember to have all 3 of these at the same time to make sure it all works smoothly, i like to keep a chest with some boat patches in case something goes south in the ocean. Just practice until you get the hang of it!

Thanks! That’s what I thought..
I’ve made a modded character that can swim, but it was frustrating when on a boat.. I made it so the character can’t leave a boat except when jumping onto land, but then realized that if you jump onto some random boat left in the ocean, you can’t leave.. I haven’t come up with a good solution to the issue yet.

As a last resort to being stuck on a boat you could drop an item and set it on fire. Boats are flammable and when destroyed any players on-board will reappear on the nearest land (with significant penalties).

You can release plank, which located on edge of the boat and jump out in cold waters.
But I was thinking if you get thrown out on Pearl island, Lunar Island or smaller lunar islands and there no materials to build another boat - you might be screwed

I suppose I could make it a configurable ability, but that’s not ideal either..

you cant get stuck when you Died

I’d consider that stuck, haha.

I coded in a configurable option last night, which if on will allow the player to jump from boats into the water. It’s not ideal and makes using a boat challenging, but it’s in case of emergencies.

you could alredy do that there is a plank on the boat to jump off

What are you referring to? As far as I can tell boats are perfectly circular and the only way off is to get to land.

there is a plank you just have to pull it out first its on the edge of it
Furry Eskimo Apr 2, 2021 @ 4:18pm
Whoa, ok, I never knew that was there! Thanks!
Oh yeah. The plank. You can jump off of it but you'll get teleported back to the Florid Postern at 100% Wetness. Just a last resort really. I guess it was klei's way to help prevent griefing.... Or something. I 'dunno.

I mean, I used it and got teleported to the Lunar island.
My character can swim, but some things can still cause the player to experience a drowning effect, and this appears to be one such example, the other being on a boat when it breaks.

Drowned used to be just Dead at first beta like Shpwrecked DLC, but they change it to washed to shore with Max HP Penalty and fully Wet
