free loot
I bought this game in 2016, shortly after building my PC.

I remember back then, some of the cosmetic gifts you'd get were items that changed the skins on things like the fireplace, backpack, and other buildable items. I stopped playing for a while, really until last year, and I notice now that the skins we get for free are usually clothes items for the characters.

I just want to know if we'll ever get drops like before. I know, free is free - and I'm appreciative of the fact that we get free cosmetics just for logging in ... but I'd rather get skins for the building/craftable items than shows/shirts etc.

What do you mean? These still drop too.

I got sign, backpack, wormhole skins from random drop.

You can get one drop each day for just logging into the game.

You can get up to an additional 8 drops per week, if you play long enough, while being in an online server.

So that's up to 15 skin drops per week!

Drops reset on Thursday at around 2:30 pm PST.

These can be any skin items: clothes/items/weapons/beards/backpacks/firepits/character heads/bird cages/chests/etc..

Some drops you can sell on the marketplace, or trade, others you cannot.

The ones that you aren't able to sell, or trade, you can either keep.. or you can unravel them into spools which are used to "purchase" other in-game skins/portraits/vignettes/emotes/etc.

So if you don't like the drops you get, you can simply turn them into spools, and save up for whichever skin/character you do want

You can also get some exclusive skins if you have a twitch account. Usually during updates, twitch streamers get drops and you get those when you watch said streams. At most, you’ll need to watch 6 hours to get the skin. You don’t have to actually watch the stream, just mute it and keep it open in the background.

Structure/ tool skins are usually much more expensive than clothes (spool-wise), so my guess is they will drop much less frequently.

actually, now that I think about it, I feel like I've asked this question on this forum before.

A few clarifications:
  • I'm aware you can weave new cosmetics.

  • I'm aware you get skins just for playing/logging in

  • I'm (somewhat) aware of the marketplace.
The biggest issue is that every single cosmetic I got in the short time I played in 2016 was a structure/tool skin. It was awesome, and free. Now, I frequently get skins for shirts, shoes, etc., and quite often those turn out to be copies of clothes skins I already have.

I know - there is a mechanic that helps you deal with multiples .... fine. I just like getting new skins for structures and tools, and getting them free is awesome.

So - beside forgetting that I may have already asked this question last year, I think my question is valid, when every skin is a shirt or some pants or something, and very often it's a copy.

I suppose that makes sense. Sucks for me though. I kinda wish I had played it back in 2016 so I could have a wider selection.
