Help. Every beefalo on the map died.
By some small miracle, there was only one beefalo in the entire map. It spawned near a warrior set piece. Fast forward to day 20, beefalo enters mating season, attacks the warrior pigs, and dies a brutal death. :(

Um, is there some way I can get those back, or some way I can survive without them? I know I can build a puffy vest with a winter koalefant, and I can get a tam o' shantern, but I can only get those ones winter's started. All my seasons are set to long, so winter doesn't start till day 30, and I need something to last me then. What'll work?

Are there anything beefalo are good for aside from winter gear? Like, am I missing out on anything? Is there a guaranteed spawn rate on beefalo, like is it guaranteed for there to be X number of beefalo per world? I ask that last question, cause I'm wondering what the chances are that there are some beefalo somewhere I've missed. I haven't explored the entire map, but I have outlined the entire map, and fully explored every savanna I've come across.

I like using the beefalo as protection. They're also a free source of manure. I guess you don't need them, though. I would check the black spots on your map more. These maps are randomly generated. You could have gotten a bad generation or maybe not. I usually find 2 herds.

You absolutely don't NEED beefalo; I personally never find myself needing them because I never manage to run into them myself. If you're looking for winter gear then the thermal stone is a fantastic item to work towards and isn't too hard to acquire assuming you've run into a quarry biome. As for actual real clothes that you can get before winter, you could get bunny earmuffs as a hat and is also rather easy to obtain.

As said above, you don't HAVE to have them. If you REALLY want some.. aside from starting a new world.. you could use Console Commands to spawn a few in.

Beefalo are supposed to be found in every world, but I don't think there's a fixed amount generated or maintained by the game. If you only had the one herd then you're SOL unless you use the console command:

c_spawn("beefalo",X)
where X is the number of beefalo you want.

On default maps there should be at least 2 independent beefalo herds. One default herd is in big savanah near portal the other default herd is in a forest, same forest can get petrified trees later that year also. It is the forest with a very small savanah patch far away from portal.

Good luck, also you can spawn them back in as @novaava mentioned with :

c_spawn("prefab",amounth)

Beefalos are only important for taming & mysterious marble or celestial altar piece transportation. Other than that they are 100% optional and can be ignored. Tam o shanter is better winter hat than winter hat, and beefaloo hat you only need for taming in mating season anyway :3

PS: Both breezy vest & puffy vest are good clothes for winter. Breezy you can do before winter starts and puffy only inside winter, until then just use thermal + firepit to fight freezing.

They probably caught a Beefalo virus; Next time keep them healthy.

Thanks for the answers, guys. I ended up just going with rabbit earmuffs, a thermal stone, and a firepit to last until Winter officially began, then I made a puffy vest with the only 2 beefalo wool I might ever get. Then I got a tam o'. I'll keep an eye out for another herd, but I already found another small savannah that's near a dark green forest, which seems to be what @redhead was describing, and no beefalo there unfortunately. I'll keep an eye out, I'm just glad to know they're not that important.
