If you're referring to the set peice reed trap with tentacles, then I'd say it's no more useful to maxwell than any other character (Excluding Wickerbottom). His Codex Umbra needs them to be crafted, but how many are you really going to need?

It's still a great set peice to have in your world though. It's an effective way of dealing with deerclops and winter hounds and once the tenticles are taken care of, it's still a large amount of reeds in a single location so you're not trapsing all over the swamp on the occasions you do need to gather them.

the tentacles won't respawn if we kill them all?

No, i don't believe tentacles are affected by the World Regrowth setting. No tentacles will ever respawn (excluding the Big Tentacles in the Caves)

if you have a freind wicker you can get lots of books and use them as maxwell
