So about Walter
Walters out, this post means nothing anymore




Does he have any real downsides? Is he afraid of mushrooms, because if not you can just eat a fistful of those to regain your health. And isnt sanity really only a problem when fighting giants/gathering NM fuel?

Being less than 100% HP makes you drain sanity. Basically, he's 100% designed to not fight. He seems to have a super strong support roll with having a beefalo and chester on hand at all times.

Some would consider Walter not losing sanity passively to be a downside as it would probably be inconvenient for meta glued players to farm nightmare fuel to rush dragonfly with on day 3. :DSTskull:

He looks really fun, though. Been lookin' for a fun main for a while. :)

He doesnt lose sanity when near a boss, has a ranged weapon, can run away if necessary, etc. That sounds pretty designed to fight to me atleast. Just take a hit, lose some sanity, immediately heal yourself and resume fighting

I see Walter kind of being a support character/a ranged damage dealer. Since the damage causes the sanity drain attacking at range might be optimal for some players. I would imagine that other characters would be fighting at the front while Walter fires cursed pellets.

Woby needing food reminds too much of fat Packim Baggins. Let's just hope Woby doesn't need that much food.

Nope, not really.

They will have to be real careful with his recipes and tweaking for Wobby, just monster meat seems pretty cheap for beefalo tier movement speeds with no random buck offs.
The free chester aspect is also concerning considering they make Warly have to craft his first chef pouch, kind of a red flag that the idea of a "balanced" character changes dramatically per refresh/character.

Well gather you have to feed Woby, He is not a mount right away and reverts to a smaller state if not feed.

Not sure how much monster meet it takes to transform or how much of a food drain he could be. We don't know Walter's base stats either, he could be a glass canon given emphasis on avoiding direct combat.

I do hope that Walter will have downsides other than his sanity drain below 100% health. If that's all that's intended then he sounds very powerful. Of course, we don't know everything about his stats yet or if he will be changed.

Low hp means it's faster and easier to reach 100%
So he should have more hp or just the normal amount

and his sanity should be low.
his "free" chester should be a craftable
remove portable tent, helmet and ability to cook faster. :)

Sanity boost around trees , cook faster, better sleeping, all seem like over kill... probably should be removed.

Honestly low HP is better balance than sanity could ever be, going insane with low hp means greater chance of dying during a boss fight,. Portable tent is fine since no one uses tents to begin with other than Wormwood, which is a nice new possible synergy....

As long as helmet is somewhat expensive to craft, than it's not the end of the world.

It looks like Woby is baked into the character, so I think it should remain. However, maybe it would be more appropriate to craft a saddle in order to ride Woby as a mount....

We Dont know the Perk with Afraid getting hurt gonna be exactly, How about when you getting hit not only HP depleted but Sanity too then add Sanity Passively Decrase, so the example its 2 smack of Deerclops make normal Wilson at Critical Health, how if with Walter its gonna be Health and Sanity at Critical Level then add Passive Sanity drain Because he Wounded?

How can you kill Beequen without Bunny Chesse as Walter? How Woby Mechanic Gonna be in Term of Metabolism? like Critter or Beefalo? Can Woby Dead? ts the Inventory slot gonna be same as Chester? what Recipe of Walter item?How many The Hat and Forest Restore Sanity for Walter? it is the tent Same as Normal Tent or Decrase Usage due to Portable or Expensive to Craft but same Usage like Normal tent?

But, if the sanity debuff is really game changing, maybe that's the reason they added a hat and the campfire stories

TBH a lot of characters has a ton of hidden things they can do that are just little bits and pieces, like Woodie being able to befriend creatures longer, or lureplants not being hostile to Wormwood, or Wurt being able to read Wicker's books, or Maxwell being able to read Wicker's books, etc.

He could be pretty broken, or just kinda good, it's all about the details. He sounds like he will be a lot like Woodie, who has a lot of things going for him, but none of them are that spectacular that he is OP. Might make a great cave baser or solo character.

Slingshot - I doubt this will be powerful. Having multiple types of ammo can be an inventory hog. How much do the rounds stack? Does it take up two inventory spots all the time (1 for slingshot and 1 for ammo) or do you have to "load" the ammo? Poop pellets is the most interesting imho. Being able to deaggro from a distance would make it easier to get mobs to fight each other.

Sanity - If he doesn't take sanity damage from food, this is just bonkers. But I'm guessing it's just sanity auras, darkness, caves, etc. It will make him a great cave main.

Hat - Sounds useless honestly, unless the sanity drain from damage is severe (side note, does that include picking cactti?)

Portable Tent - Kinda neat I guess.

Bee Allergy - Hilarious. Makes Bee Queen more challenging, and "bee biome" potentially much more deadly.

Woby - How many inventory spots? I doubt it will replace chester. Can Woby die? How much MM does it cost? I doubt the mounting would be better than beefalo riding, but if it's a slight speed boost like Weregoose it would at least be good before walking cane.

Campfire Stories - Probably useless, but excellent flavor.

We don't have as much information about him to decide whether he's balanced or not, we'll really have to wait to see his stats and how each of his mechanics will work.
He seems to be a rather versatile character that can do a lot of things and has many different items available to him that would each be pretty good, but none of them seem terribly OP compared to what we already have in the game.

The sanity drain can be a really strong downside for him depending on how it's implemented (and i really hope it will be), we have to remember that not every player is a 2k hours pro at the game, and sanity isn't at all a trivial mechanic to deal with (heck, even at 1.4k hours i still get annoyed by sanity when i'm trying to do my work and have to be constantly fighting Terrorbeaks). To be honest, i feel like people are underestimating the potential of the sanity downside to be saying he has none.
If you're a good enough player, then nothing will ever be a strong enough downside to make up for a character's upside, and we can't take just the best players as a parameter to decide if a downside is bad enough for a character.

But low hp also means you die faster. If lower hp was really an upside, Maxwell would be the choice for fighting, not Wolfgang.
