Don't Starve Together

What should I eat.
I always rely on planting lots of berry bushes then hunting rabbits to combine into meatballs. How can I improve and what should I do instead?

are you talking about surviving winter?

well the most reliable food sources are fully meat based.

do you have a birdcage with a bird? well in that case here is what you could do.

since you say you have morsels from rabbits, try and get your hands on more monstermeat.

this is why it's beneficial to have spiders in your base's vicinity.

so basically in winter you mostly rely on bacon and eggs. unlike meatballs it's a full meat dish.

you take 3 monstermeat and cook them over a fire. you feed 2 of the 3 monstermeat to the bird to get 2 bird eggs.

this creates bacon and eggs if you throw 2 eggs, 1 monstermeat and any non monster meat into the crockpot.

webber mains can go fully 2 eggs 2 monstermeat for a 50/50 percent roll on either bacon and eggs or monster lasagna.
since webber can eat lasagna it's a strategy to abuse but any other character should make bacon and eggs with at least 1 normal meat.

if you don't have a bird cage you could continue your meatballs survival by just heading out to mine ice glaciers.

3 ice and a morsel makes you meatballs.

Or to add to that, assuming nothing has changed drastically since I last played. You could do 3 eggs and 1 mm/meat for meatballs. So you don't have to waste any of your ice. But that would be a situation where you have more mm than regular meat/morsel. Likely to happen if you're playing with multiple people who aren't gathering food as often.

Ideally, you want to save your best resources during winter. But if you're desperate, meatballs is just 1 meat of any kind and 3 filler. So if you find carrots in the wild, maybe don't ignore them.
yes still works but since meatballs are inferior to bacon and eggs it's a waste.

3 eggs for meatballs is definetly a big waste

As I said, it's a situation more likely to happen for someone that has more monster meat than regular meat. Or just a surplus of rotting food.

For me personally, I've been in quite a few situations where on public servers, people just aren't prepared enough. And unfortunately, I can't do it by myself. I don't even find base early enough most of the time for that to even be possible. But I know enough to know we could get by on just spiders for meat, and just make meatballs. Assuming people do go crazy and mass produce meatballs early on. And since I main Wigfrid, I do make it my duty to at least clear nearby spider nests.

I simply wanted op to be aware of the possibilities, if for whatever reason they weren't able to make bacon and eggs.
it's a waste because 4 mm turn a pig to a werepig.

i know noobs rather hammer early game for their pigskin, coz certain content creators on yt always show off how easy it is. well, think about it, a stack of mm turns 5 pigs which you will easily find in the pig king village. you just gotta pray that not some greedy ♥♥♥♥ hammers and take it all.

even forest biomes have plenty of pig houses if some stupid willow doesn't torch the entire forest.

so you can effectively convert mm to half its amount of normal meat and that is how you sustain your supply of bacon and eggs plus get your pig skin.

1st
-I'd also like to say. stop hunting rabbits. waste of time, especially if you're using traps. you can actually kill them with lag compensation turned off a semi decent connection and good timing. they literally run into you with proper positioning.

2nd
-See a pig? kill it, build hammer early on, stock pile pig skin from pig heads at touch stones. in swamp or from pigs you kill, you'll never run out of ham bats. or helms and you'll kill almost anything in 1 cycle excluding bosses.

3rd
- Stop sitting in your base, if you're running out of food you're probably idling about either waiting for your traps to catch something or your berries to grow. if you really wanna stock pile food there's so many options, Cactus for sanity, random spiders out and about, hound mounds. etc the moment you walk away from your base and the food sources you set up, you're surrounded by food

4th
- Butterflies are god tier early game, run up to them just hit Ctrl F and punch it, you get a chance for butter and each individual butterfly wing resores 8hp and I think like 9.5 hunger? I don't remember

5th
- Early in the game your chances to run into an ewecus or a varg is increadibly low
you should do every hunt you see. the trunk when cooked is like 75 hunger and 40 hp
and each koelaphant gives 8 meat

6th
- if you have a ton of beefalo just kill some, each one is 4 meat. a horn is needed for a tier 3 winter hat which will help you in winter. till you get a tam o shanter
and only 1 beefalo needs to be left alive in order to replenish the herd. I don't mean kill all but 1 but if you see like 20 of them there's no harm in killing like 10.

and easy way to kill a beefalo is to feed it a piece of grass or twig, and it'll follow you. lure it away and hit it, then just kite it the same way you'd kill a koelaphant

aside from all of that. get a bird cage and catch a bird. if your meats spoiling turn it into eggs.
Turning monster meat into eggs and then giving the pig king eggs is an easy / lazy way to get
some gold, which will save on flint. and gold tools last longer.

when you do finally reach winter you almost don't need anything I mentioned above since 1 monster meat and 3 ice is meatballs. so stock pile ice and destroy a tier 3 nest pre winter and
you're all set lol.

I never said it wasn't a waste. And obviously we want new people to do things more correctly. But people should be aware of their options, and not feel so locked in if things don't go as well as they saw mentioned in the forums. People should be able to adapt. The ideal set up means nothing when only 1-2 know it and the rest are taking more than they're giving back.

I only play on public servers, so the risk of being taken down due to other people eating twice as much as me is real. They're new, so I don't really hold it against them. Unless they refuse to leave base and try to play. Op, and anyone else, should know that even with mediocre options you can still survive. Even if all they have is mm and no clear access to pigmen, for whatever reason, they could still make meatballs with 1 mm and some mushrooms, etc. Expect the best, plan for the worst.
