The Walrus Hunter
*Note, we have no mods and are playing default on every setting and have it set to madness.

So I refuse to look at wiki's or videos of any kind. I want to preserve the game's magic. This game truly is incredible, I even arranged friends to join me every day! We lose horribly and in the most ridiculously hilarious ways... most of the time pathetically failing even before winter.

Well, this time we went at it. It was a rough start, but we managed to graverob every grave we could. We collected so many red and blue gems, nightmare fuel, magic logs, and most of all, fridges FULL of stacks of meatballs and food with winter gear for dayz. We did not even die once, and the death count usually sails past 12 total before winter... But then that day came....

Day 23 rolled around, we were finishing the rest of our work. We were finally going to build the next machine you build from the top hat for the ultimate magics. We had to build the top hat first though, and we had everything but rabbits, so you know, why not go get some rabbits? We return freezing even in our winter gear to see 2 boss creature in our base just chillin' ya know? One was a giant dog I attempted to take out earlier but ended up leaving it be andthe other was the Walrus Hunter.

I suppose I could understand that the boss I enraged earlier may have wandered to our base, but spawning the walrus hunter into our base was a little scummy. I could tell it was spawned because of the layout of the landscape and our base's construction relative to it. The place he was at was impossible to get into, especially with the time we were away from the base, just 3 ticks of the clock.

So with this said, we died pathetically, with me being the first, given I am maxwell and was already hurt from freezing. I was rushing to go warm up in the base and got met with an instant kill dart before I even stepped close to the base. My friends simply could not get food, given the other boss was chillin there too.

What could have been done differently to avoid this? I really dont want to come back and see dudes partying in our base and forcing us out to starve again. I hate that.

Before the winter comes, you may see on the ground where Iglo for walruses gonna be (it looks like a circle made of dirt) (Iglo icon on the map)
During the winter, this dirt circle turns into the Iglo in which 2 walruses and 2 Ice Hounds are. During the day whwn you are around their Iglo, they will come towards you,and if you are within their range, the biggest Walrus will make a call to make hounds attack you and he himself gonna shoot you with darts.

To avoid them, you simple need to look around and if you notice them coming towards you,run away really quick.

To defeat th you can use
-Chester and use him as a meat shield (hounds and walrus gonna target him and you cna in this time go for the kill) (the biggest Walrus gonna run away but after a while he stop and walk back to his base (in thos very moment you can kill him really easily)
-Pigs for do the work for you,or any type of minions which can help you in the battle (wendy- abigail,Maxwell- Shadow duelists)
- make sure your thermal stone is warm and you have campfire made somewhere close, quickly wear armor and rush woth killing them.

In case of freezing, you can also light up the tree with torch to make yourself warm

Hope i helped you

I knew about the encampments, never knew what came from them, other then Woodie saying, "I should avoid this when winter comes." So I took his advise and surveyed the area. The closest one was a tremendous walk away, about a day. Given we were gone for 3 ticks of the clock and there is only one way into our base, and he was in the back, he must have spawned from the water and entered our base and just sat there. I noticed them beating up o chester so I will utilize that later.

Thank you for the thermal stone Idea, I will not make the mistake of not carrying one again.

MacTusk is annoying. I would reccomend making two darts (that's all it takes to kill him) to avoid needing to chase him everywhere.

The spawn-in-base problem is likely related to your mods, whether intentional or not.

It is worth noting that MacTusk will only attack if you approach him, otherwise he will simply follow you around.
The Varg is also insanely annoying, I would reccomend gaining his agro then running as far as possible, then putting him to slep and return.

correction: it should take 3 darts as ol tusky's health is increased in DST

I had no mods installed. It may have simply been a bug then. All I know is, I was freezing and ran to my base. Before I even got near my stone wall baracade, I saw the winter hounds I assume that were accompanying “MacTusk” rushing towards me and a dart instant killing me due to my shortened health by freezing.

The game glitched prior to this event too, with the day, dawn, and night lighting cycles flipping between each other spontaneously and causing significant graphical lag. Then it stopped and the npc’s began acting strange. Spider’s attack cycles were different in which they would move while attacking or would attack before you bait them to, resulting in an unpredictable attack. I assume their attack initiating radius may have been affected.

Moral of the story though, have a blowgun with darts and a thermal stone ready for winter next time.

sounds like you need to verify your game files.
if you don't know how, just right click on DST in your steam library, click on the "Properties" button (all the way at the bottom), then click on the "local files" tab, then on "verify integrity of game files". this will basically check for any files that are broken or missing, and fix them. this almost always helps for stange out-of-place bugs like what you are describing.

Will do. I have done so for other games such as CSGO and dead by daylight, as many hackers tamper with your files. It may have been a hiccup or something. Likely to never happen again though.

So what is MacTusk’s behavior cycle like? After he killed me, he just sat in the camp for a long while and left, but only up the street and stayed there.

he will wander around his camp during the day, go in at evening and night (though the dogs will stay outside). if he spots you, he will follow you around passively until you approach him, then he and his dogs (and son too, but he is harmless) will attack. if you get too far away, like most mobs, he will become passive, but he always tries to stay near his camp, and will disregard absolutely everything to return to it if he gets too far away. otherwise, he will run from the player and shoot darts that do 100 damage and are nearly imposible to dodge. he is easy to hunt with the aforementioned 3 darts or some armor and healing items. hunting him is a good idea because he drops the walrus tusk (ingredient for the walking cane) and sometimes the TamO'Shanter, which is the best sanity-restoring hat in the game (to my knowledge).
