It seems as though this is made up as standing near them provides no sanity bonus.
also the butterflies can be captured with a bug net to plant then in the ground for flowers wich also will preoduce butterflies and the flowers can be used for the bee boxes so the bees can produce honey
thats why they are useful in the ground than in your pockets hope you find this useful
sorry for the bad writing
Sanity can be restored by other ways, such as eating cooked cactus, green caps, jerky, icecream, taffy or even through sleeping, prototyping and even killing shadow creatures will yield sanity.
If you're playing as Wigfrid, then you won't be able to rely on tons of sanity boosting foods but instead you can gain sanity from attacking stuff.
If you're playing as Woodie, planting any kind of pinecone will give you 5 sanity
If you're playing as Willow, standing near fires will raise your sanity over time
If you're playing as Wilson, shaving your beard will give you sanity
If you're playing as WX-78, eating gears will restore sanity
And Maxwell regens 6.66 sanity a minute, so he should be sorted with him
Oh and lastly, you are right in saying that flowers don't give a sanity aura, because they don't and I don't know why people have said that, also I'm sorry if this was a bit of an information dump but I hope it helps :)
