I always base at oasis for this reason. I'm not really a cave person, so I'd much rather stay in base during summer.
Easy protection whenever hounds spawn plus the added bonus of being able to collect silk, glands, frog legs and fish from mobs running into tenticles
Desert is best*
I always make a base in a piece of land that stems out into the ocean, like a pennisula. It's like owning your own island which is fun i guess
But nothing is as permanent as temporary. It's fall of second year, and all I have is temp base. Near starting portal, 5x5 tile junkyard, without chests. Logic was: I do have materials for Alchemy, it's not a dead end location, close to grass, close to stone, close to forest, close to cave, beef are 2 biomes away.
Not sure, if nearby moose nests count as advantage or disadvantage. I didn't notice them, until spring. Suddenly, I had 2 moose descending near my base, as I fought them, 3-rd one appeared.
Evict the pigs).
On that notice, it's bad to settle too close to pigs/rabbits/catcoons, with any character. Accidents happen. ('♥♥♥♥ ate 6 gears)
Agreed, the desert allows easy access to dragonfly, allowing you to farm gems and scales.
The desert also has access to cactus, which is great for any non Wigfrid/Maxwell player, and tumbleweeds allow you to farm grass and twigs much faster than a regular grass/twig farm, same goes for grass gekos if you're lucky enough for them to spawn near your base setup.
