Why does the game require the creation of an account? Steam account not enough?

From another topic on Klei accounts:

A few things.
First - When you get items and gifts in DST it's on your Klei account, not just Steam and you as a player are represented to us as a Klei Account, not just a Steam account.

Theoretically that helps DST be more independent of any specific platform.

That means we can give you something because you own another game, or other things like some of our big puzzle rewards or twitch drops regardless of platform.

Additionally - it also means we can contact you directly if there is an issue with your account and it helps us find you easier when you are having an issue and adds an extra layer of protection for you (and other players).

At the end of the day, really it just helps us support the game better.

We have never sent emails to these email addresses for any sort of promotional reason. We have never sent bulk email to our Klei accounts for any reason at all actually. And our Klei accounts enable you to see exactly what types of marketing emails you could opt into (or entirely out of).

In terms of "Data Collection" that is entirely unrelated. We have to make you consent to Data Collection to comply with privacy regulations. This is with or without a Klei account.

Data Collection in terms of how we use it and what we collect is laid out in our privacy policy. https://klei.com/privacy-policy

We can't service the game without collecting some data about you so you can't play online if you don't consent to data collection to comply with our own privacy policy as well as regulations.

TL;DR - The email addresses allow us to provide a better service. We aren't gross about how we use it.

I hope it answeres your question.

It does thank you for the comment. However it is a game ender for me, no pun intended. [or maybe it was :)]

They could set it up so the account is invisible to the user and is auto-generated when game is instanced via steam which is already an email verified account system. Seamless.

blah!

It requires an account, because that way you can earn Item drop also from the Twitch. And when your saves/ files damaged, whenever you have any problem with your items and such, you can use your Klei account to recover the damage.

I mean it's an online game in general, most online games require accounts outside of steam or create an account for you on their platform from your steam account, but an account of you on any game for them exist. if you want to play without needing any other online account klei or otherwise they have a single player version.

This should be tagged with Requires Third-Party Account. It only says there is a Third Party EULA.

Avorion Online doesn't need an account to be created to play online. There isn't a single good reason to require an account. I returned the game after I saw I had to create an account. I have a steam account. They can use that. If they can't use that then they are collecting data. I'll keep my information to myself. I'll make sure to never purchase ANYTHING from this developer again.

There is no need for that calculation actually. The game literally has mandatory to agree "Data Collection" at the settings page. Without checking that, you can't play online.
