The worlds type is suvival by default. This means that if everyone on the server dies, it gets regenerated, so you'll have a fresh new world with new characters. It also happens if the last living player leaves and only ghosts remain. If you want to keep a world, even if everyone dies, set its mode to endless. It removes the regeneration and you will always be able to revive at the portal. Alternatively, you can set it to wilderness, there the world never resets but each time you die, you get a new character and lose your recipes, so I personally don't like that mode too much.
