If you don't change those setttings, it's completely random, and depens on your luck what kind of map you are going to get.
There is however three or four mini [Lunar] Islands always in partitions, near the major [Lunar] Island. I'm not sure if that's an intentional design or a bug. (Or maybe it's random too.)
Generally speaking, I see weird and connected Lunar islands once in every 10 maps. So the chances are high for some reason.
I have had the same issue: the island is directly connected to the mainland. A few moon things (spiders and plants) are on the main island but other than that I don't think I'm missing any content.
Its a cool world gen and I would suggest keeping it as you don't need to deal with boating.
