Don't Starve Together also has 3 characters, 2 which can be found and played in Don't Starve classic, but there's also a character exclusive to Don't Starve Together, that being Wortox and skins.
Don't Starve however is only single-player and has 3 DLCs, Reign of Giants, Shipwracked and Hamlet.
The expansions which are not in DST? Like Hamlet and Shipwracked. Also the two games are quite different mechanics wise. The fire mechanic in DS is much more brutal, there're no save slots and overall it's considered more "hardcore" then DST. DST also has it's own challenge though, some bosses have more health and are aimed towards a group fight and soloing them can be trickier than in DS.
Singleplayer DLC content, Hamlet and Shipwrecked, have unique content that isn't found in DST.
I believe that owning DS Hamlet dlc unlocks a character instantly to be used in DST, which is nice.
If you want to play solo main game, may as well play DST and possibly get a mod to nerf the hp of bosses to what it's supposed to be for a solo player. Otherwise they're scaled for multiplayer and while doable, most would prob find the tanky bosses boring. I sure do.
Hamlet and Shipwrecked content is DS only, so if you want to mess with those, need to get the singleplayer game.
EDIT: So if you decide to play Hamlet and Shipwrecked in DS, I believe they do not interact with RoG content, so you don't need that particular dlc.
