From east to west, Wes is best.

the wilson is supposed to be the most balanced and doesn't require any special strategies

Currently

Wickerbottom is the most OP character an Woodie is the 2nd IMO.

It may be difficult for a new player tho, so you can also try Wilson as a start.

Depends on your playstyle and what you want to get done the fastest. In my opinion the best character for a beginner is Wigfrid because she is very strong in combat and hunting for meat is very easy when playing as her.

Wilson to start off with. Then after you get the basics. Pick a character based on your style. I like Webber for his decent health and hunger stats, sanity is never a problem since I can deal with my inner demons. And I typically never go near pigs or bunnymen.

I think you should start with Wilson, the game is hard enough itself to care about the character's downsides , and there's a chance you gonna stick with the character you choose first (who is not Wilson) and can only play with him/her, and that way you can really limit yourself which is not good because a sandbox game can become really boring after a while. All in all, I recommend that you start with Wilson, but later, try them all. And also, remember there are countless ways to play and enjoy this game, don't get frustrated if you are playing it differently.

As a beginner, I recommend Wilson since he has no downsides, compared to other characters which can get confusing and/or annoying since they would do something such as Willow's downsides of when she's nervous she lights fires.

I can also recommend Wendy. She can make early fighting a lot easier and the reduced damage output makes it necessary to learn kiting patterns instead of just facetanking everything. The lower sanity drain is also nice to get used to the mechanic.

Yes she is a lot worse against bosses than other characters but she introduces people nicely and slowly into sanity management, farming, being efficient with your time (ghost damage bonuses) and learning when to run from fights. I learned the game with her.

That's probably one of the worst starting characters. You completely circumvent regular food production and the necessity of healing items...

Good starting characters should help you learn the game mechanics without having easy to trigger fail states that you can't really do anything against without knowing about them.

That's a nice point; and actually one of the best reasons why Wilson should stay as is, without any new mechanisms or major up/down-sides.
It will help new players to learn to survive without relaying on a specific character's perks.
