How do gifts work?

Some people say 4 during a week, others say it's after a certain period of play time. I played a new server with a friend last night for roughly 4-5 hours and he got 2 boxes and I got zero. So both of those seem like bs because we got way into winter and I still didn't get any.

You can get 15 items per week max. You can get 7 of them after launching the game. Other items you can get during the playing, intervals are random. To get all of them you must play at least 15-17 hours. Gifts timer will be reseted at night Thursday-Friday. But of course all this information is stored at Klei's server and can differs from what I've wrote.

Earlier (before March) it was 4 items a week, some people missed the news it seems.
As ZRazbor said, you can get a daily gift just for logging in, and 8 more weekly gifts, the latter resets roughly around the Klei dev stream on Thursday. I never measured my times but I feel that in like 8-12 hours I always got these 8 gifts.
Maybe you already got your weekly skins but your friend didn't, that's why he got gifts last night and you didn't?

Finally someone giving me a good answer. This makes a lot of sense considering I just started playing the game this week and I had played more than my friends did. Haven't played for very long so I hadn't seen any news.

I can confirm this. It's average time to get all drops.
But the drop time isn't fixed :/ It's random.
It's terrible when you get 7 drops in 8H and you wait until 12H+ for 8th item ;-;

With a lot of luck you can get them all in 6H or 14H if you are unlucky (but those are super rare)

In my case it is usually between 9-10 hours for all 8 drops.
Time between drops variates from 1h to 1:15h in some rare cases max 1:30h in between some.

15 Item drops at total, per week.

8 of them will be dropped during game-play in any server.
(It may take more than 7 hours to get all.)

7 of them will be dropped everyday of the week you login to the game.
(1 per day.)

Once you got all the 15 drops in the current week, you need to wait until it's [next] Friday, and then you are eligible to receive the next 15 drops of the new week, and so on.

I think you get a gift every 64 minutes (8 days) of playing. Also you can afk in the pause menu, i discovered this when went to use the bathroom and came back to a gift waiting to be opened.
There is a cap of how many you can get per week, i don't really know, but i think its around 8 as most people say. I live in Europe and the cap resets at 23:45 at Thursday, when also the daily gift resets.
