Also Where's Wendy? :P

wendy is probably in middle on woodie and wilson (just my thought)

I more or less agree with the typical tier list.

Woodie is NOT below Winona. In fact he's about equal to Maxwell, he's pretty underrated. Technically Maxwell harvests faster, but in actual reality you're only going to be harvesting in bursts instead of 24/7, and Woodie excels at burst chopping. He's also tankier in addition. Maxwell is still the better pick, but only slightly.

Winona contributes basically nothing to the team. She's at worst a crutch character for noobs and at best a quality of life character with a unique item that is okay but nothing special. She's only ever so slightly above Wilson.

Wilson shouldn't be above anyone except the worst characters. His only passive is his beard, and if you actually prepare for winter properly it's irrelevant.

If you only have six players (the standard server size) I think the ideal composition looks something like this:
1. Wickerbottom, for general utility and keeping Wolfgang fed.
2. WX78, for ruins exploration and his strength in general.
3. Wolfgang, for boss killing. I think he can be replaced though, he's not strictly necessary.
4. Maxwell, for resourcing and additional DPS, as well as reading Wicker's books.
5. Wigfrid, for farming meat and providing armor in the LATE game (please don't waste all our gold when we're still setting up the essential base structures, bird cage is more important than your stupid helms).
6. Flex slot. Maybe another WX since the world can theoretically have like 70+ gears.

+His collection rate for wood is higher
+His collection rate for rocks is much higher
+He doesn't need a shovel / beaver form to waste time digging stumps (Shadow digger)
+He doesn't need to consume some of the logs he harvests
+He can stay permanently insane if he wants to
+He has sanity regen for caves

Maxwell only has a slightly faster wood collection rate. Doesn't really matter.

He does have a much faster mining rate.

He doesn't need a shovel. He just needs to spend nightmare fuel. Ironic that you point out logs but basically handwave Maxwell consuming his own resource. Which, unlike Werebeaver, also takes time to earn before he can start using his ability.

Technically speaking, Woodie never needs to eat a single log. It's hard to have that perfect of resource management, but it's indeed possible. In real world practice, I maybe eat six logs for every fifty that I obtain. It's not a significant downside at all. You let your meter drain naturally then get it back by gnawing things down.

Bit disingenous. Maxwell has better sanity control for sure, but they *both* have higher than average sanity control. Woodie can use Werebeaver to go insane very quickly, then use the pinecones to exit insanity whenever he wants. If you want to stay insane then just don't plant the cones or have someone else plant them? I don't see the issue here.

His passive sanity regen is better for caves, true.

Maxwell is definitely the better pick overall, no doubt about it. But there isn't this massive gap between them like people love to claim.

Woodie at the very least belongs above Wilson.

Wickerbottom > Wolfgang > Maxwell > WX-78 > Wigfrid ~ Webber ~ Woodie > Wendy > Winona > Wilson > Wes > Willow

Woodie is slower at farming Wood, Nightmare fuel and Rocks than Maxwell, yet you're saying that he's just underneath Maxwell in terms of utility, because of his extra health?

Woodie is slightly slower at farming wood.

Woodie is moderately slower at farming Nightmare Fuel...IF you don't take into account items like Nightmare Sword and Armor that will quickly drain him back below the threshold, and the spawn time between shadow creatures. In which case the only real difference is Maxwell can constantly farm it while Woodie has to take a minute break every once in awhile.

He's far slower at mining rocks. That is the first actually major difference.

His health bonus is a significant upside. Yes, 75HP with Nightmare Armor and Healing Items is adequate in professional hands. It's still nice to have that much larger room for error.

I guess the problem is using vague terms like "slightly below" instead of something actually measurable. Maybe he's not "right underneath" Maxwell, but he's definitely not several tiers below Maxwell is my main point. Woodie is still a great resource gathering character in a vacuum.

Edited my previous post.

Wickerbottom > Wolfgang > Maxwell > WX-78 > Wigfrid ~ Webber ~ Woodie > Wendy > Winona > Wilson > Wes > Willow

Even though he's not the best resourcer he still contributes far more to the team than someone like Wilson or Winona does. Not really clear where he lies in relation to Wigfrid or Webber since their roles are completely different.

And I get that Wilson can be useful for Meat Effigies for the team but there's two problems here:
1. You can just farm Beardlings, and even if you don't get hair you still get other useful resources like very easy and safe to obtain Nightmare Fuel so it's never a bad idea to farm them. As an aside Woodie can sit pretty comfortable in that medium level of Sanity even.
2. Effigies should be your last resort for reviving, and you'll probably have close to enough beardhair before Wilson needs to shave anyways. Life Giving Amulets are actually pretty easy to obtain and red gems don't have many other valid uses.

Yeah, was thinking the same thing. Only downside is that he's just a bit redundant if Wigfrid is also farming monster meat. But still a very good pick for the flex slot.

WX is one of the best for regular Don't starve, and while it is the best character for ruins rushing and having amazing endgame stats (As well as the fastest runspeed) it doesn't contribute as much to the team as other characters do.

It's upsides only help itself, for the most part.

free magiluminescense for everyone tho
ok it might be kind of a selfish character but THAT MOVEMENT SPEED

While I tend to place Wendy higher because I love that child, I can see why people give her such a low rating to her. Her passives are not the best, and she has a very big downside (no melee for Wendy mains, you can't one shot birds with a boomerang).
She excels at winter, while others characters may not, let me show you my point:

Wendy has Abby that deals massive damage at night (40), and I always used this to the most intense tooth farming before first Deerclops. I go to the desert, where the dogs are, trying to not to get any aggro until night (or dusk to start the massacre) and get all doggies with Abby. Her sacrifice means nothing to me if she dies, which I managed over the time to know when to retire and come back again, but sometimes mistakes happen. Summoning her is so easy and requires nothing from my part, as a fellow player can kill a bird for me, or a Catcoon can. Her passive gives me a good control over my sanity, so I can decide when and why I want to get insane.

Abby IS sometimes tedious as passive, and that I agree. It happened to me that her IA didn't work well and died (again) to a tentacle, or she randomly killed moles (that's hilarous). Wendy can neglect the sanity penalty on caves easily, and be useful on the path to the guardian thanks to Abby. She can tank and let the tank heal, be used as a sacrifice, or safely lure bosses (you should have a bit of practice to do this). Also while her pasive makes her useless as melee, you can freely use darts or staves, so while you, Wicker, WX, or Wolfgang main are concentrated on dealing damage to bosses, she can stun/freeze them, or help with the darts.

Again, it is not like Wicker or WX, and I know, but at dusk/night, you have a free weapon that can help a lot with your survival.

PS: Abby is the best evil bee's cleaner.

Wendy is one of the best picks in Lights Out. 3-shotting spiders feels goood.

I agree with the tier lists. The fact that a LOT of characters are outclassed means that the game really needs another character update.

You're right, my God. Wes is the best character.

Webber shouldn't be that high, his main weakness is a fly swatter

Why is webber that high though? I get that he's the best at farming spiders but seriously why is he number 1? (Besides king wes)

Also Wigfrid being above Wolfgang KEK

You see, in order to survive all you need is food, sanity, health and good weapons and armour, right? Well, after you manage to collect all the nests you need by simply upgrading them, destroying and moving them, you have all the resources needed. Silk for sanity (tophats), monster meat for food (either meatballs, by themselves or as gramfel lasagne) and spiderglands for health. Also, if hounds were to try to attack you, you have instant weapons to use as hounds target spider nests, which you can upgrade prior to the attack, meaning that each hound has to deal with about 7 or 8 spiders per nest you have. If things like winter are too much of a problem, you can easy kill beefalo for wool using your spider followers. Killing spider queens are easy peasy as you can use her own minions against her, and finally, if there is an enemy that is too strong for you or your spiders to kill, you can just upgrade your nests, destroy them and then relocate until they despawn. Spelunking is also extreamly easy as webber since spiders are basically everywhere in caves, along with the obvious fact that they don't attack you on sight. And that is why webber is on top (below Wes for obvious reasons.)

So what you're saying is that Webber is the best for basic survival, which I can agree with.
If you want an easy, reliable way to survive then yeah Webber is good, but how does this even compare to:

- Wickerbottom's books
- Wolfgang's damage
- Maxwell's resource managing
- WX-78's Max stats, runspeed and ruins rushing capabilities

I get that Webber is an easy character to play and he's very popular in the game's playerbase, but what's so good about his ability to farm one of the weakest mobs in the game?

Wicker could do almost the same thing with her "On tentacles" Book.

Here are solutions to all your problems:
yes, wickerbottoms books are probably one of the best, and that is why i put her right behind webber, but webber i feel is better because of the other bonuses he has over the characters that im about to state, other than just the obvious advantage that she can read, others can't (exept for maxwell)

wolfgangs damage can easily be beaten with an army of spiders, since most of the weapons are single target and not splash damage. also, wolfgang needs about 6 pieces of meat to stay mighty. with 6 pieces of meat i could ally with (6*3=maths) 18 spiders, preferebly guardians (or spitters if you have access to any)

maxwell is a tricky character to understand, and that is why i see why most advanced players enjoy playing as him, however, resource managment is a non issue when everything is going to get done anyway. sure, he may be able to make an alchemy engine in say, 3 days, but that doesnt really matter in the long run as it will be made eventually. (also, 75 hp can EASILY chewed on by spiders)

also, yes WX is op as knobs when he has max stats, but that takes gears, and i mean a LOT of gears, which (if playing with a team) they wont be very eager to fork over as they are a rare and valuble resource early game, and if alone, killing clockworks with low max stats can be a bit challenging, unless you waited a while to get some good armour. however with webber, killing clockworks for gears is easy as 2 monster meat could ally 6 guardians, which can easily kill a clockwork knight with assistance. and once you have the gears as webber, you dont need to eat them.

also, wickerbottoms book (the tentia one) is very good at farming spiders, yes, but it takes up a LOT of valuble resources and it will only hold the same yeild that a small amount of monster meat could do.

Lol dis again.
Don't get me wrong but don't we already have bazillion "what is best char" "post most fav char" "best tier to pown" threads?

Alas also it very much depends on the focus. For example megabase tier lists are VERY different to raid boss tier lists. So OP you might want to focus and narrow down your question pls.
