Killed by sinkhole on surface

I was on the surface and I heard some rumbling. Then later I got killed by a sinkhole. looked like a giant hole in the ground destroyed a crockpot and chest. Could someone explain?

I also think that he will open sinkholes whether you meet him or not, so you should try and look around for him. Plus, I think he only spawns in Summer. I don't know/remember everything, but Volx's video should help.

I was a bit pissed because I couldn't find him so I just went the lazy way and disabled it via a mode. only disabled it on the surface but in caves it is still the same but still thanks!
