Also best to fight it outside your base if u want to fight it by ur self or with your team, because sometimes, the one of the hounds is red, which mean it can burn your base down
Wendy and webber perfect for solo imo
Those are good tactics, I won't lie... but not very good when they attack at night (which is almost constant, for me).
Look at map, and find nearest any npc, even spider will works, ooor, u know that purple biome thing, it can spawn a tentacle, it will be harder to walk there i know, but the tentacle can help also
Seems situational, but I thank you for all the tips, bud.
Basic concept: 2 pits (normal and endothermic) plus one lightning rod, cobblestone turf (for 30% added speed) all around for 2 rows and a sh|tload of tooth traps on that cobblestone - all these built at a certain safe distance from base. Now it doesn't matter if it's day or night, summer or winter - just run around that panic 'room', tooth traps will kill all hounds (the maximum of 8 to 12 per player in advanced stages). Don't bother with walls. Bonus: have a log suit and/or football helmet equipped. Added bonus: have also a Walking Cane and lantern. Congrats, now hounds are not a problem for you anymore. Good luck next with titans! (as said panic room concept is pretty darn useless in their case)
Here you can find some good info about dealing with them at home when they are too many to fight:
http://forums.kleientertainment.com/topic/72834-how-big-should-tooth-trap-fields-be/
If you happen to be far from base, when you start hearing the alert try to run to a place with spiders, bees, beefalos, pigmen... hounds will aggro all of these.
There is a trick to make pigmen stay outside during dusk and night putting food into walls close to their houses, you can see it in some of the pictures in that link. Pigmen will fight hounds every time they see them, so they are actually a really good partner in that fight.
I reccomend making tooth traps with the teeth smaller hound squads drop before they get bigger.
Swamp? Best place to kite a threat. Put those tentacles to good use.
Especially with the harder enemies, utilize aggressive NPCs. The enemy of your enemy is your friend.
If you have cave entrances or wormholes around you should be able to move through these and lose them that way too, provided you find another exit, as they will AFAIK keep hanging around where you dropped them at.
They may spawn at night, but that shouldn't be too dramatic f you have a torch and sufficient grass and twigs for more at hand. You can maybe place some fireplaces around, or lamps, to light a greater area before they move in. Or wear a miner helmet, although a lamp in your hands plus some combat helmet is probably wiser to mitigate damage they dish out. You can also use something like the Pan Flute to put them to sleep and then just walk away.
"Panic room" suggestion above is a bit overkill if you ask me. If you can spare the time and resources to build something like that sure, but it isn't really needed if you know the alternatives.
