How to remove Hound Mounds?

Hello,
Noob player here. On my new world I need rocks, and there is a rockylands very far away. However, I found a rockylands near my base, but the entrance is guarded by Hounds / Hound Mounds. I've tried fighting a few, but more keep spawning so I can't actually chop down the hound mound.

There are about 4 hound mounds. Any suggestions on how to remove/deal with?

You will have to kill them by hand or you can let pigs distract the hounds while you attack the mounds. Deerclops/bearger could also kill them

How many hounds would spawn? there are bees nearby but I'm not sure if there are enough bees.

Hounds will continue to spawn indefinately until you destroy the mounds. It won't spawn any more (than it's natural spawn rate) as it gets attacked/destroyed.

I'd suggest leaving a couple as they're a good source of hounds teeth.

Like with spider dens, after you kill the first few spiders, they spawn much less, is it the same with hound mounds

No, they spawn at a consistent rate, but only 1 hound per mound will exist at any 1 time. ( I think.... don't spend much time around them to be honest)

Nope, I've had it that I attacked a mound and two hounds spawned

Ok. For now, I have distracted them with a pig/bees so I could sneak past and get to the boulders.

I'm pretty sure i've seen up to 3 hounds spawning from 1 mound. If the mounds are too close I suggest getting an ice staff and freeze a few while you kite the remaining 3 or 4 while smashing down the mounds. But don't destroy all of them as they are a good way for farming darts / traps.

Nice! Having some allies distracting mobs is also a useful ability.
