DST is best played with friends when you're all available to play together, and when that isn't the case, the server is turned off. This means you progress at a pace that's suitable to your group, and nobody is coming back to find all their food rotten or the world vastly altered.
I have 2 servers. 1 is there for when me and friends are all online playing together, and the other is just for me, there to provide me with a DST fix when my group is busy.
