"Examine" and "Inspect"

Sometimes when I fire up my own hosted server, I can never pick anything up from my inventory. Sometimes it works normally, but sometimes it just says "Examine" on left-click and the (occasional) corresponding action, such as "Eat" on right-click. But this means I can never move anything to my inventory or chests. Any ideas behind this, like a keybind or something?

maybe your ctrl, alt, or shift is stuck, try using them a few times and try again
