I think it is safe to assume they plan on sticking with thier game engine.
Gotcha! Thanks for keeping up to date.
http://www.heroengine.com/he-games
It should be noted they are claiming ESO uses Hero Engine.
It IS NOT the Hero Engine. It is a built from scratch engine created specifically for ESO by ZOS. The Hero engine was used early on for prototyping assets while they built the game's engine. The Hero Engine is still credited in the development for ESO because it was used in the development of ESO. Giving credit is also most likely a contractual obligation for its use.
SWTOR also uses Hero and chokes in multi player PVP and isnt able to be graphically updated wiothout needing a new engine. It is also heavily modified from the original Hero Engine.
Hero has no real games to mention, and the only 2 claims, ESO and SWTOR both butchered the engine and rebuilt it.
Then this game got delayed forever and a day due to legal issues with HeroEngine, to the point, for a mmo, this game has no real population, and repopulating this game will be extremely hard.
http://steamcharts.com/search/?q=the+repopulation
15 people playing a MMO. No really a mmo with 15 people. As long as Hero engine is involved, you cant expect much for this games future.
Nothing against the devs, but the game is using a washed up has been engine that wont take this game anywhere.
Ever heard of nostalgia? It's huge. Nostalgic players have deep pockets and don't whine for refunds for 5$ games. Maybe it's time to develop a game like Repop for veteran gamers who have already proven themselves in "better" games only to return to simple games that once made them happy. What if an imperfect yet enjoyable game is enough? Hero Engine isn't perfect but it gets more shade than it deserves and fundamentally, it still has its charms.
Cut The Repopulation some slack. It's been revived from the dead, twice. It's a miracle that it exists at all. It also gets zero promotion. Even people who are fans of this game don't know it's back. But, the few who have found it again are playing the absolute hell out of it. That says a lot.
Hello, First slow down there kiddo, I actually helped kick start this game, as I am a backer. I supported the idea of this game and I am not talking bad about the game, or the developers.
I am talking about a game Engine that has never really shined, and has tons of flaws. So before you go tossing out whines, I never asked for a refund, nor do I whine on these forums.
The reason people dont like Engine, is because it performs down right horrible on multiplayer platforms, and the only 2 games with a big IP, both rebuilt the engine, because it could not be used for their needs.
Furthermore, that same engine, is the direct cause for the delay of The Repopulation.
So Ill cut you some slack, as I am sure you didnt read my entire post, but just a line or 2, and made a post. Not sure you will bother to read this post before posting a half thought out reply.
If you took the time to rewad my post, as I did yours, you would see I said nothing ill about The Repopulation. Infact, I only spoke poorly of Hero, and that is my opinion, which, as a freee person, I am entitled to have such opinions.
I'll now unfollow this thread, as I doubt it will progress any further in a nuetrual or positive way, and neither OP nor the game needs a thread debating sticks and stones.
Happy Easter all.
You're going to want to re-read it again. There were no sticks and no stones. You mentioned "15 people" playing "an MMO" and linked to Repop steam charts. You were talking about Repop there weren't you? Or do you think you weren't? Or maybe you think Repop is somehow independent from Hero Engine as if fundamental format changes would not change the very essence of the game? It could be made into a tabletop game, a children's TV series or how about an adult coloring book? If it's independent of its format, Repop could be anything! But it isn't. That was the only point made to you. It's a Hero Engine game, some of us actually do like it that way.
I love it when some kid shows up, claiming that they've worked in the industry, but writes like a child who's not even done with puberty..
Point proven..
* A independent group of developers (Calling themselves Above and Beyond) wished to make The Repopulation and pitched the project on KickStarter (Technically twice).
* The KickStarter campaign(s) were a success and development went ahead utilising the Hero Engine.
* Some years later, the game was in a very basic alpha state but was rather playable and so Above and Beyond pushed the project out on Steam to get additional funding and a wider pool of testers.
* There were various problems encountered partly due to the sheer scope of what was desired to be achieved but largely due to the engine and how The Repopulation utilises not just the game engine but the entire backend infrastructure services on offer (So servers, account system etc).... basically switching engines would require redoing most of the backend infrasturcture work as well.
* The topic of switching engines due to the sheer magnitude of a problem is was causing floated around for awhile but as mentioned were many walls to that happening.... this became even more needed when Hero Engine and the whole infrastructure the game utilised essentially became non-operational as Idea Fabrik hit considerable financial problems and went dark.
* Whilst Idea Fabrik, Hero Engine and the entire infrastructure the game was built around were for all intents and purposes dead, the developers announced their plans to port the game over to Unreal Engine, but that it would be a considerable effort and they would start it off by creating a branch off game called 'Fragmented' as the first steps to seeding the foundations a port of The Repopulation would require.
* Some time later and amidst rumoured talk of how The Repopulation was actually a partnered project between the developers, Idea Fabrik and a unknown third party that had pulled out and in doing so led to a loss of financing which is what caused Idea Fabrik to have to go dark in the first place, ownership of The Repopulation changed hands, and now the project is owned and developed by Idea Fabrik as what is likely a last ditch effort to try drum up attention for the Hero Engine as a viable option for wannabe MMOs and to stop the company from completely going down.
You won't find manyof the old blogs over on The Repopulation site about goings on at that time as that all got wiped when Idea Fabrik overhauled the site. But you can still find various press articles covering potential goings on at the time, like this one: http://massivelyop.com/2015/12/30/the-repopulation-rejects-blame-for-hero-engines-financial-struggles/
Which references a old A&B developer post that still exists (for now) explaining the situation: https://steamcommunity.com/app/322300/discussions/0/485624149150098736/?ctp=2#c451848855006950528
To my knowledge, Above & Beyond still plan to eventually make their MMO built using Unreal Engine, it's just it won't be The Repopulation anymore and the original teams development focus is still very much on Fragmented.
What passes for The Repopulation now is owned, developed and run by another company altogether to the one that originally set out to make The Repopulation, and the new captains at the helm's main interest lies in Hero Engine and marketing it.
Thank you for the detailed post.
I guess that sums up the repoulation. Feel pretty sad I bought it for $30 but it happens I guess.
Tbh I cant see anything coming from this game anytime soon or ever imo.
Literal lies. A&BT lost their game server access but other Hero devs didn't lose anything during the issue with the "3rd party". Can't imagine why it was just them.... were they the 3rd party perhaps?

Also man ABT is dead, they aren't making an MMO in any engine, they haven't even patched Fragmented in almost a year and the console release never happened. At least we didn't have to pay extra for it.
