Can I get completely screwed over by the mystery bags?
When I started playing I got the headband on the second bag. However I restarted and now I'm getting nothing but crap. So far I got oils, and the last one was even a cookie, of which I already had three and the game gave me 100p instead. Is the headband eventually a guaranteed drop or can I end up missing it completely?

The item inside the bag seems to be fixed when you pick it up (or the dungeon is entered), so you can't just restart the game either - once you have a bag, it always gives the same item when opened.

Yeah it's random. I'm in the last area and I only just got the headband. Still needing the Helmet. That said I think the magic hood is better since it gives more damage to magic attacks which is pretty much all I do with Dragon's Breath.

Oh there's another permanent item in the bags? Great.

I've been experimenting with the bag in the bracken hollows, entering the area at different times, wearing different stuff, getting to the bag differently, playing another area before it, etc, etc.

I'm always getting the same item from it. Either I'm very unlucky or the game sets the item right when you begin for all stages, or when the stage is first entered/unlocked/whatever.

For the record, you cannot be "screwed" by the bags. If you don't get an item you want from a game, you have more chances to get it from a new game +. If you play long enough, you will end getting all items. This is if you are lucky.

Oh well it won't do me much good to get it after I've beaten the game. Awful design decision, especially given that it's an item that up to doubles your offense.

Actually, you are wrong. Once you beat the game, you unlock more difficulties which will be harder. 2x attack will then be useful. If you don't plan to play more than one game, it's not worth it either way unless you want to be overpowered for your current difficulty setting.
I think you're garenteed to get the hats out of the bags, its just random where. Theres a ton of bags. I think certain levels are garenteed to at least drop one hat from a bag.

I thought I did cause I didn't have any of the accessories until late in the game. Late in the game, there are tons of mystery bags, and I think I got every accessory and item I needed including the one for the trade quest and the wallpaper items.

So me getting the headband at my first try is uncommon? O.o

I didn't get the diamond in my first playthrough, but I also didn't get all the gold medals so I might have missed a couple bags.

I think Supernatural Cookie is right. As long as you get every Mystery Bag, you'll get every item. But the order is random.

I didn't get the diamond on the second run, and mastered all levels. Yes you eventually get all hats but since you start from zero every run you can still get screwed by certain hats dropping very late if you just want to bust through everything as fast as you can.

Just had a run where two of the three hats dropped in the very last bonus level. Right after I'd maxed the Magic Hood to hopefully speed that run up, too.
