No, this game stands on its own just fine. You may miss some nods to the other games, but that's about it.

basically this game starts after Steamworld Dig 2 is over, it carries on the story but it stands perfectly on its own as well.
The DLC "The outsider" IS something I bought the moment i got this game because it adds the story of "Fen" which is a very important character in steamworld dig 2.

So if you'd like you can either start with Steamworld dig 1 , then 2 , then this or you can start with this game all works fine.

If you don't want to play steamworld dig i can give you the short version in spoiler text below me.

In the first steamworld dig game your hero ends up saving the earth from vectrons that are trying to destroy it, in steamworld dig 2 he gets lost so you play with a girl called "Dot" That searches for him only to find out that he was taken by other vectrons and at the end of the game the earth is ruined by them so the steambots all fly to space and thats how steamworld heist beings, this isnt much of a spoiler i guess since if you saw the beginning cutscene it says this.
