Make sure the controller is on BEFORE you open the game

If it's Xbox360 Wired, it should just plug straight in to a USB port, unless you need an adapter.

If it's Xbox360 Wireless, look for an Xbox360 wireless receiver, than look for a setup-guide.

If it's a logitech gamepad, I can't help you

Use a program which assigns a button to a key it can assign for example X to spacebar. its called "joytokey".
