As an additional thing, both versions include Heroes 3 HD, I own that already. If I buy, would I get a giftable copy in my inventory or would this extra be wasted?
And if I buy it on Uplay will I get a Steam key?
Maybe, and no.
If the Steam version uses the UPlay launcher then yes, you should be able to launch it directly from UPlay. But no game bought on UPlay includes a Steam key.
I just bought the Complete Edition, and got this message.
According to our records, you already own one or more of the items included in your cart.
If purchasing for yourself, you will not receive an extra copy of:
Heroes® of Might & Magic® III - HD Edition
Would you still like to continue with your purchase?
Thanks for the info, so basically wasted. I hate paying extra (it's cheaper on UPlay without the bonus game, so it isn't a free bonus) for stuff I already own if I can't even give it to someone who doesn't.

It's like buying Doom 3 BFG, which includes not only Doom 3 remastered and DLC, but also de previous Dooms as well (plus DLC).
But if you don't like the deal don't buy it, I don't see the complication.
I didn't check current prices, but at least in 2018 the version on UPlay didn't include the bonus AND was cheaper. In other words, the version on Steam got the added bonus and had a higher price tag. You could argue that just MMH VII alone was more expensive here and the added bonus was still free, but it sure doesn't feel free under these circumstances.
I'm pretty sure I compared the Complete Edition in both stores. As sure as I can be over 3.5 years later.
So since you need Uplay anyway to play HVII it seems like it'd be better to just buy it there then. Unless the sales in the ubi store are not as significant, I don't know how they work there.
