How does one get new character portraits?

You can make your own. Go to docs and find the game folder and open the portrait folder. My advice is to find a picture online that you like and use this website http://www.notra.fr/portrait.php
It's in french, but it is not hard to figure out, select Icewind Dale. Upload your picture, Crop it, save it, then stick it into your portraits folder. If I missed a step then I suggest you check out boulder's gate or icewind dale EE forums, they will have more advice.

I week ago I Google Imaged hundreds of pictures to make custom portraits and uploaded them all online in a rar file. The pack includes over 300 custom portraits. You can get it here: http://www1.zippyshare.com/v/85542353/file.html.

If you do want to make your own, though, it's not hard. I just used Photoshop to get the specific dimensions for the portraits, but I have heard of the website bluewolf mentioned.

I think the portrait pack I made - which has been greatly updated since my original post on this thread - can be used for IWD2, but honestly I don't remember testing for IWD2. I know my portraits are compatible with the Enhanced Edition versions of Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Icewind Dale.

The most current version features over 4000 portraits, including some for races that technically don't exist in the games but looked so nice I had to put them in there!
