Umber Hulk Strategy Help (Spoiler Alert)
I am in a need of an umber hulk strategy. Specifically, the large chambers before the entarance to Malavon's area which contains endless amount of umber hulks.

I HAVE defeated Malavon, his iron golem guards, and the few umber hulks within his throne room and adjoining rooms. I used the 10ft invisibility spell on all party members, and sneaked past endless amounts of umber hulks into Malavon's private area. However I am now out of any invisibility spells, and I cannot rest anywhere within Malavon's home. As soon as I leave to go back I will be attacked by the confusion spells of the umber hulks.

Since I have no priest, I have no access to chaotic commands to prevent confusion. My mage entered this part of Dorn's Deep just shy of level 6. I believe level 8 is needed to have spells that prevent confusion?

I tried cheesing it. Cast improved invisibility on my two spellcasters (avenger druid, diviner mage) and then used AOE spells and ran out. However, upon resting and re-entry, the 10ft invisibility spell no longer works. The enemies just "know" I'm there, as soon as I enter, without casting spells or initiating a battle. I guess cheesing it won't work.

So, without chaotic commands, is there an alternative to effectively deal with all the umber hulks? I realize, I could reload and do my initial strategy, except this time have TWO 10ft invisibility spells saved, so I have an exit strategy. But, I have a thing about living enemies un-killed. LOL.

Knowing the rest of your party and their levels would be helpful in making suggestions.

In general, Potions of Clarity grant the same benefits as Chaotic Commands. There are other potions which grant saving throw bonuses that would help. Potions of Mirrored Eyes should deflect gaze spells. With a potion of Clarity your tank can take the gaze spells while the rest of your party stands back and uses missile weapons to drop them.

One strategy I have used is to have a thief hiding in shadows and snipe but it takes time as you have to isolate and do one at a time. It basically goes like this:
Thief hides then manuevers to sneak up to the edge of vision of one enemy. Fires an arrow or crossbow and runs off before it hits. (Yes, timing is important) The umber hulk does not get a chance to see the thief and thereby use its gaze. Thief hides again, repeat until the umber hulk goes down. Move on to the next one.

Given what you've suggested, I think potion of clarity on my melee units would help. I'll revisit previous locations and see where I can obtain them. Thanks.

Anyway, anything you want to tell about the party members? Level 6 seems very, very low at this point.
dude, i was level 30 when i entered dorns deep and still had to put it on easy lol.

then again i did play on insane most of the game with just a single caracther, so XP would skyrocket.

When I mentioned levels in my post above, I meant how high of a spell level my spellcasters have. So, the actual level reached for the party is:
Cavalier lvl 10
Kensai lvl 10
Archer lvl 10
Fighter/Thief lvl 10/8
Avenger lvl 12
Diviner lvl 11

EDIT: I went back to Severed Hand and Kuldahar to visit all known stores. No one sells potions of clarity. I checked Icewind Dale wiki, and apparently there are only 2 such potions in the game, both found within the Severed Hand. I already had one in my possession. But I'm not spending and hour searching the levels of that tower to find the other. Though the gnome in a crashed zeppelin (what's his name) sold some mirrored eyes potions. I'll test the theory out when I get more time. And I'll post the results.

Its working. I'm sending just a solo fighter to deal with a small group of umber hulks and minotaurs at once, buffed with mirror eyes and other protections. Eventually the fighter succumbs to the gaze effects of the umber hulks, but having no other party members nearby ensures any hits are against enemies. Sometimes I even send AOE spells into the area. Progressing nicely. My need to kill everything satiated. ;-)
