gems and other items

is there anyone in this game who will buy these items? or are they just a useless holdover from baldur's gate?

yes they are a couple but i can not remember just who right now but unlike balders gate there are no gem tied quests

Gerth (the merchant in the building to the right when you first enter Kuldahar) is the first merchant you can find who'll buy gems after leaving Easthaven. He will also buy quite a few other useless items as well as keys. (Just don't sell the keys until you're sure you no longer need them)

Orrick will buy jewelry, rings and necklaces, but not the gems. BTW, he will pay more for them than Gerth will. There will be an elven merchant's spirit in "The Hand" who will buy gems and such. IIRC, he will also pay more than Gerth. I usually save them up for him.
