But IIRC, I found a couple of ways get XP from them. That said, it seems like only 125 or 150 apiece. Almost not worth the effort. It has been a while since I did, so I may be mistaken.
1. They have so few hit points that a fireball will usually take them out before they explode. Since they are not committing suicide the XP was awarded.
2. A high level cleric using turn undead will turn them into popcorn and get the XP. I know that at this juncture in the game most clerics in a regular 6 member party are not high enough level. I had one party I was running through IWD for a second time (trying to get some of the level achievements) and that party's cleric turn undead was high enough to destroy them. Cannot recall what level he was, but had to be around 15th or more.
3. Theoretically, if you can time your damage to all hit simultaneously they should "die" and not explode. Perhaps two mages firing magic missiles together might do it. But I am guessing on this.
