I think the difficulty is just right for my level of ability. I'd rank IWDEE and the expansion an exciting and engaging 5/10 on the challenge scale, which is the same as I'd rank baldurs gates sword coast stratagems mod. Vanilla baldurs gate is a dull 1/10. Middle of the scale is the best place to be: hard enough that some of my team will die sometimes, but not so hard that I have to be extremely specific in my methods and try for hours to get through a fight.
If you go in at the end of the game right before finishing the main quest with a party of level 30's then it will be much easier.
So when you do it is in fact very relivant to your claim that it is "difficult as hell".
