Its not the same, because so much time has passed, and that was somewhat first person, while this is not.
However, the game is very like the book "Red Storm Rising" on which the game is based.
(especially the bits at sea)
I would think you'd like this if you enjoyed that.
With subs, you have layers, you have towed and hull sonars, and different sonar properties depending on conditions such as depth (i.e, play around in the shallow South Atlantic area and you'll see why neither side in the Falklands was able to get the other's subs).
As an aside, 1980s-WWIII scenarios aren't my favorite ones, because it's been done a lot already. I prefer different time periods for almost all the scenarios I make.
I've heard this compared to it.
CMANO is not even close to RSR. If that's what you're looking for don't buy CMANO.
What CMANO is is a Harpoon clone that fixes some database issues and bugs that plagued Harpoon for many, many years. It's prettier too. There are many similarities and some significant differences.
That said: I was disatisfied with the editor and its capabilities. I didn't like things like Pre 1979 Mk48 Torpedoes that could dive to 1000m depth. I didn't like how aircraft behaved on attacks and the kill probabilities and algorithms used for air 2 air combat. Didn't like the hoops that have to be jumped thru to fool the editor into making random start locations for groups. Didn't like that one couldn't create waypoints with decision logic that would allow for the creation of multiple paths from that waypoint which path is chosen based on scenario designer criteria. The list goes on and on. Push comes to shove I believe the capabilities of the editor were over stated in the marketing hype used to promote the product. In other words unrealistic expectations were created. Some, maybe all of my complaints may have been addressed since I removed CMANO from my PC though I doubt it.
I will say that if one has never played a complex naval simulation then CMMANO is a good place to start.
Here are the major updates since launch:

This game is nothing like RSR. RSR was a light weight tactical treatment of modern sub warfare. Loved the hell out of it but that was then (C64), this is now (i7, 24GB). CMANO is the successor to Harpoon.... more detailed, more refined, better presentation (GUI, graphics, etc) and much bigger is scope.
As far as those who would compare it to Fleet Command? Not even close. Same subject and scale, but Fleet Command is beer and pretzels compared to CMANO.
