Similar to Red Storm Rising??
I saw a quote someplace that this game is similar to Red Storm Rising. Can anyone who has played both let me know if this is true or not? (I really liked Red Storm Rising back in the day). Thanks!

edit - If you know of a specific Game Play type video that would give me an idea of whether this is correct; please help me out with a link.. (I am not great at working my way thought 100's of UT videos...hehe)

I didn't ever play RSR, but from googling it now, I think you would like this.
Its not the same, because so much time has passed, and that was somewhat first person, while this is not.
However, the game is very like the book "Red Storm Rising" on which the game is based.
(especially the bits at sea)
I would think you'd like this if you enjoyed that.

russonc, check out eh pinned thread on "New Players - Please Read". It has a number of game video links that should show you what you are asking.

Looked up the RSR game, and yes, there are similarities. You can play as an LA-class sub slipping your way towards a Soviet fleet and sinking as much of it as you can-or you can play as the fleet trying to hunt the sub. Or as tactical air trying to sink the fleet. Or so much more.

With subs, you have layers, you have towed and hull sonars, and different sonar properties depending on conditions such as depth (i.e, play around in the shallow South Atlantic area and you'll see why neither side in the Falklands was able to get the other's subs).

As an aside, 1980s-WWIII scenarios aren't my favorite ones, because it's been done a lot already. I prefer different time periods for almost all the scenarios I make.

I can't believe somebody just referenced RSR. That game is like 25 years old. Now I feel old! I loved that game, btw but haven't tried this yet. Wondering if it's like that Janes Naval Game that came out about 15 years ago.

Thanks to all for the input!!. I will take a look at some of the video links this afternoon.

Fleet Command?

I've heard this compared to it.

Took a look at some of the Submarine Warfare videos....Looks somewhat complicated (steep learning curve), but I think this is something I will like (waiting for pay day, but I will add this to my collection.

Caveat: I purchased the Matrix version about a year ago. You won't see CMANO in my Steam profile. Matrix rarely gives refunds especially after owning one of their products for well over 6 months. I got one. The devs told Matrix to issue it and matrix agreed based on the number of Matrix products I owned and how long I'd been a paying customer. I'll leave it to your imaginations why the devs did what they did.

CMANO is not even close to RSR. If that's what you're looking for don't buy CMANO.

What CMANO is is a Harpoon clone that fixes some database issues and bugs that plagued Harpoon for many, many years. It's prettier too. There are many similarities and some significant differences.

That said: I was disatisfied with the editor and its capabilities. I didn't like things like Pre 1979 Mk48 Torpedoes that could dive to 1000m depth. I didn't like how aircraft behaved on attacks and the kill probabilities and algorithms used for air 2 air combat. Didn't like the hoops that have to be jumped thru to fool the editor into making random start locations for groups. Didn't like that one couldn't create waypoints with decision logic that would allow for the creation of multiple paths from that waypoint which path is chosen based on scenario designer criteria. The list goes on and on. Push comes to shove I believe the capabilities of the editor were over stated in the marketing hype used to promote the product. In other words unrealistic expectations were created. Some, maybe all of my complaints may have been addressed since I removed CMANO from my PC though I doubt it.

I will say that if one has never played a complex naval simulation then CMMANO is a good place to start.

In fact, many of the concerns you raised have indeed been addressed, might be worth taking another look now.
Here are the major updates since launch:

Way way more expansive than RSR. Own both and while both are great RSR is many years out of date. This has such a much bigger weapons database over many decades.

After watching a number of videos, I think I will like this one. Looks like I have a large learning curve ahead, but that's fine. This looks like a game that will have some staying power in my library. Will grab it on payday! :)

This game is nothing like RSR. RSR was a light weight tactical treatment of modern sub warfare. Loved the hell out of it but that was then (C64), this is now (i7, 24GB). CMANO is the successor to Harpoon.... more detailed, more refined, better presentation (GUI, graphics, etc) and much bigger is scope.

As far as those who would compare it to Fleet Command? Not even close. Same subject and scale, but Fleet Command is beer and pretzels compared to CMANO.

mmmm, beer & pretzels...

have to agree played RSR (in fact still have it somewhere) CMANO is completely different. The only real similarity is it deals with modern and near modern conflict

Also realize how endless this sim is with tons of user scenarios and campaigns. The editor itself is very user friendly so its a nice sandbox sim. All the toys from post wwii to future or even research tech weapons are available. You can easily recreate or create any battle you can think of, with an entire globe available and nearly any country at your disposal. For me that justifies the price point. Endless flexibility. Just wish the would seriously consider workshop implementation. I've over a hundred highly polished scenarios to share.
