Radar horizon and sensors with OTH
The Basic Training: Warship Operations tutorial mission has me using an Arleigh Burke destroyer to fight a Nanuchka.

One of the tutorial missions talks about the radar horizon, which it says at sea level is roughly 12nm.
My destroyer's surface radar goes out to 35nm, but I don't actually see anything at that range.

The only OTH (over the horizon) sensor listed is the AN/SRS-1A Combat DF Blk 1, which has a range of 500nm and is listed as a HF/DF w/ OTH Targeting, but it doesn't seem to do anything for me.

I tried launching my helo and painting a distant target with its radar, but my ship doesn't seem to be able to use that data to launch the RIM-162 ESSM SeaSparrow missile in an ASuW role.

How exactly is the Arleigh Burke supposed to target things over the horizon?

Anyone?

Hi,

IIRC in that tutorial you don't have any Harpoon missiles onboard, so your only option for striking that ship is to arm the helicopter with Hellfire missiles and use them against the ship.

The SRS-1 sensor is an ESM kit and thus can only detect units that are radiating, and IIRC in that tutorial the Nanuchka is not radiating (at least until it starts shooting at your helicopter).

Alternatively, you could select to get really close to the Nanuchka, close enough that you can use your SAMs as anti-ship missiles. But remember: If you are close to them, they are close to you.

Thanks for that info.
So OTH sensors are ESM only? Or do some platforms have surface radars that are classified as OTH?

Some radars are also OTH-capable, for example the Sovremmenny-class destroyers have OTH-SW radars ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over-the-horizon_radar#Alternative_OTH_approaches )
for targeting their SSMs.

Got it. Thanks!

ESSM has not enough range i guess to engange in SASS mode, 12NM is radar horizon at sealevel....a bit higher place for the radar gives you a higher range...and the 500nm range is for Air surveillance not against surface units ...

just take a ball and place your finger on the ball...now place a ruler on your finger and the ball....point A is your finger point B is where the ruler touches the ball...thats the radar horizon.....the ruler does not end at your finger but with more distance to point B the target has to be higher in the air to be trackable by your radar
