The first system is IFF .. Identify friend or foe and is actually something that can be turned on or off by Aircraft depending on need or situation. This is essentially a squacker that lets a given radar type system give off a positive friendly indication if the UNIT is transmitting the proper code for the side it is on, or if it is not transmitting the code or wrong one it IDs it as FOE .. actually it IDs it as unknown and you then must use other methods to id the unit.
The less sophisticated a Radar type the far less it is to be able to classify a Unit type specifically, things such as its speed and return signature and so on can help a person or a computer GUESS at the probability of unit type but never be in most cases 100% sure . Which is why your units STANCE as it is called in many games is so important. Does it attack all Unidentified units, or does your sides ROE say it must first employ a MK 1 EYEBALL and visually confirm it is enemy or hostile. This is best way, but negates the advantage of longer ranged ata missles and sts missles and so on
