Note: this only works once; even if you don't finish placing the new part, it overwrites it and next time it will show you the last part you tried to put on. So if you're putting a junk part where a broken part was, back out and put a new part on it right away before you forget.
I did some testing to answer this very thing. You only get money for parts that needed replacing. If you have to replace 2 pistons, and you replace all 4, you only get money for the two that were required to finish the job.
I feel like the completion bonuses more than make up for the few extra dollars I spend on similar parts so I don't mix them up. The Suggestions thread above shows the devs are considering making it so parts are required to be replaced in groups (all brake pads, spark plugs, that sort of thing I'd imagine).
Oh man If this is true than this will make it so much easier. It obviously needs to be more prominent, or stand out more in some way. Cheers
I'm not sure I fully understand your question.
The % a job calls for doesn't mean the ones you're replacing. It means the ones they're being relaced with. It only matter when replacing parts. Like using used parts in your inventory instead of buying new ones. Or repairing parts at the work bench to be reinstalled on the car. If the part is above 40% (as per your example) it can be used fas a replacment.
If a job calls for 40% or greater that's only used when trying to decide which parts to put back on the car. Otherwise I replace red parts(which are bad) with new parts and put orange or better back in place where they came from. It's best to do a full inspection before you begin so you know what's bad. If you do that they will show up on the repair list once inspected but you'll have to remember where the bad ones are located..
