Gearbox
Not really into cars but always oddly liked Gear Head Garage, hence I'm here :)

So got looking at car repair videos and due to discussion with someone at work today who is into cars. Why is the "gearbox" in game called a gearbox when that part is apparently called the "Bellhousing".

Bellhousing is a colloquial term which refers to the outer transmission housing around the flywheel and clutch. In cars with a longitudinally oriented engine (front-engine/rear-drive), the bellhousing is often a separate component in between the engine block and the main gearbox, however in many cars, especially modern front-wheel-drive cars, the bellhousing is a nonremovable part of the transmission case.

In the game, the "gearbox" is a single component which encompasses the enitre assembly of the bellhousing, transmission case, and all their internal geartrain parts, so "gearbox" really is the best term to use, since it is, you know, a box with all the gears in it. ;)

In the states the stick shift transmission is refer to as a manual transmission. The US uses this term when regarding it the most. The bell housing is just called that because of it's shape. It just covers the clutch system and make it possible for the manual transmission to be joined to the engine. So it is a separate part unlike a Automatic transmission. But even on one of these they are refer also as a bell housing once again by its shape. Some Automatics this is removable I think, can't remember.

How ever in Europe in many countries it is called a Gearbox or a Gearbox transmission. After all think about it, it is kind of a box, and has gears inside it. Since the game is out of Europe, mainly Poland, it would make sense that it is refer as a Gearbox in the game, Because that name is used in Europe.

There are quiet a few parts that use different names vers US terms. Since the game is from Europe, I never bother with all that name stuff. To me its just nick picking the little things...

Bellhousing is more like "housing" which covers flywheel and stuff. I can agree that maybe it should be called "Transmission" .. we always wanted to use US english and if there are some mistranslations - let us know.

Is name "gearbox" as a whole unit wrong?

No, if that is what it is refer by you, I do not see a need to start changing parts names to match US terms. Gearbox will do. Once you change that to manual transmission, then it will be sway bar to stabilizer bar, then crossmembers to uni-body frames, front crossmembers to uni-body Engine Carriage, then you have to item out one front shock type so it can be struts and then those drive axles a, b, c, would have to be called CVC axles, then it will be something else and you guys will be up to your nose in madness...lmao!

"Gearbox" and "transmission" are synonyms. No need to change anything.

oh yeah, the carb would have to be called 4 barrel quadrajet double pumper carburetor, see were I am going. It is fine as is..

In the US it is generally referred to as the Transmission. The confusion often arises as in British English the term "transmission" is the entire drivetrain and so most not in the US refer to the part at the Gearbox.
If you wanted to use common US English, then it would be listed as a Transmission but is very minor and doesn't take much for a user to understand what it is. :)

I dunno, I speak US English as my first and only language and I thought gearbox and transmission were the same.

OK. Well that explains it then. Stick with Gearbox :) don't change it to Transmission.
