what does the doctor do

that's right the doctor. The guy who injected that other guy with joy at the beginning st the game before he closed the blinds on you.
Does he do anything? Apparently if you stay off your joy for too long he'll come after you.. But what does he just leap out of nowhere and attack you? Or are you forced to go to him? Does he kill you or just knock you out with overdose? Can he even attack you? Surely the bobbies would just beat you up if you were a downer? I would want to see this but y'know... Permadeath and all. All I've seen the doctor do is sit behind a window at a certain checkpoint between the islands. also if you use developer cheats and go through the wall you can talk to him and he answers back! Does anyone have footage of the Doctor doing anything else? You can tell I'm really interested in the doctor.. But whatever

His name is "The Joy Doctor" and during the gamescom trailer you can see him in action! He will likely appear in the parade district and injects you with joy I assume giving a game over

I've met him at one of the gates, it's a gate you can just get joy detected at and walk by but it leads from the garden district into the area to the Apple Holm thing sometimes, all he does is ask "are you ready to behave like a good citizen now?" clears you for joy if you're on it (if not bobbies are called, run.) and lets you through.

Edit: I should say I met him in a window where you can't get to him and he can't get to you and can only talk to him - at this point its the only time he's seen aside from the openning cutscene as far as I can tell. No, at this point he does not jump you and yes the bobbies and wellies just beat you up, they do not bring you to him.... yet.

It can be assumed as stated above since it shows him injecting joy and when off joy the wellies ask "sir are you alright, do you need to see a doctor/looks like someone needs to see a doctor." and the bobbies "Hows about you and me go for a little chat and see the doctor" that his main job is to inject joy and convert downers.

I think that'll become a threat later on, because instead of just injecting joy, you can overdose on it and "immune" people like arthur unless he's overdosed seem to only be immune to the joy's memory wipes - which seems to be it main reason for exisiting, something bad happened in wellington wells and everyone is trying to hide it. (I assume war related) So what if the doctor is not only the one who created the joy but is the one who when injects a downer - makes so he's fresh and not immune to the memory wipe anymore, which is why you get a game over cause the thing with the story is arthur is rebelling because joy is wearing off, and hes becoming a downer and is motivated to escape because he can see how horrible things are - if he forgets the truth perminetly by getting injected he'd just go back to work in the archives, and act like nothing happened at all! Game over!

Also it should be noted if you use joy around the garden distrcit poor people they will say "oh lucky you, joy works for you does it?" so it could be these people have taken it for so long that they no longer can even feel happy or "high" off of it like arthur still can, but there's so many of these downers they just tossed them in the garden district to get rid of them, which could explain why the doctor mains that gate I mentioned to save anyone worth saving from the Downer symdrome.

If there's a main villain it would probably be the guy who made joy. I mean seriously he's nearly brainwashed the entirety of England (or a lot of it anyway not too sure about the entirety but still) if it does I hope it doesn't go along the cliche lines of "money is the root of all evil"

So as far as I know now, war happened and england (or at least wellington wells) is drugged. I suspect the doctor to be responsible for the joy

It's mentioned in one of the lores that joy doesn't work right for these folks - it tends to make the memories come back singed in flames, or something. So instead of getting them high, it makes them furious and makes them remember. That could all change when they roll out the actual story, though.

From what I gathered (and I may be totally off) was Britain Lost WW2 and was occupied by Germany for some time, They however needed to recall there troops to fight the soviets on the eastern front, but wanted the English to behave while they were gone ( you can see in one of the news papers that wellies are taken to Germany to farm for them to replace Germans that need to fight in the war on the eastern front) here in enters the “doctor” a German scientist or an assistant of some sort to the one that creates joy and uses it to subdue the population so that the majority of their troops may leave but not have to fear that England will rebel while there gone and even assist in their war effort against the Russians (a letter in the game states that all wellies with cars need to bring them to the train station so that they can be shipped off to the Germans and it is there patriotic duty)(as well as a different letter states there opening a museum that promotes anti-communist rhetoric) This is just a theory though!

I imagine you will have more tangles with the doctor (and his Master or Assistants) in the future as you try to escape wellington well’s or end up in a different location, Say London or in main land Europe that may still have German troops where joy is being newly introduced. (Wellington was prolly one of a few test cities to see if the drug and there plan would work and that’s why the doctor personally over saw the operations. As I said just a theory.

He says stuff like "how are you today? I mean it you know" and "lovely day isn't it?" I wonder if we'll ever actually get to talk to the doctor without using developer cheats in the parade district

seems to be the coolest part of this early access, if we put up a big stink as a community the game devs will take the time and make the doctor a guy we need to avoid to win, if we want him to leave us alone bad enough they will keep him in a box. It's kinda up to us what we get! personally i loved the old game "Toe Jam and Earl" and I think if in certain areas of some districts there should be joy doctors that are randomly checking in on the wellies and if someone is a downer they would give chase. It would be really fun if they made some random people in the town a downer from time to time, or people that have ran out of joy unintentionally and get juiced up from the doc so as players we can see the effects. Kind of a way to see what he does to the main characters when he would inject them, maybe even call the bobbies over to hold them down if they are downers like the mains are. People just looking for a pick up are injected freely because you wouldn't need to hold down a willing wellie :)
