Any downside to taking Joy?
Been playing on console, haven't noticed anything bad about it.

There's no downsides with Joy, don't be a downer. Take your joy

Once you pop a pill of joy you will be happy and reduce citizens of wellington suspecion of you being a downer, yet once you ran out of joy you will get Joy Withdrawal! This makes you hungry and thirsty while increasing suspecion of you being a downer!

If you overdose on Joy, your character will blackout and wake up at the safehouse hours later. Previously, this would also wipe your map, but I haven't tested if that's still in this version.
In the final release, you will only have so many days to beat the game, so this would be a major drawback.

THE PWNER and Shabnakh-adyr summed it up real good!

But Johandrex is also right, what downside? ;)
Well now that that's cleared up I shall pop a joy right now.

Hmm, an open world game with a time limit? That will be interesting, feeling rushed to explore would be anoying. I am sure people will flame me and say this is not an open world game.

The downside is you're taking drugs.

It is an open world game though???
They haven't released any specific details about how long the time limit will actually be.

I did not know there would be a time limit. I really hope there is an option to disable it. I hate being rushed in open world games and I like to explore. I did not play any of the Dead Rising games because of the stupid time limits.

As far as this information goes the time limit is only for the story of the game, so the idea would be that there is some other story free mode to be implimented similar to what we currently have so you can have a real survival run. But the entire point of the game is story driven more than it is open world survival.

stigmaoftherose is correct -- the time limit is effectively driven by the story and key events making it harder to survive over time in Wellington Wells. It won't manifest as a hard time limit as much as the world changing over time, a bit like winter messing everything up in Don't Starve.

We do plan to have a sandbox mode where you can configure the world, including the rate at which the world evolves and/or disabling that.

As for the original topic of Joy, an often overlooked advantage is that it just makes you forget all about food and drink! In fact, if you take enough Joy, you don't need to eat or drink anymore.

Except all that skipped hunger and thirst catches up on you once you crash. ;)

Haven't noticed the hunger part, does it replenish until it wears off or just stop it from dropping further?

You can see the details in the status screen. 1st tier Joy (IIRC) slows hunger and thirst by 50%, while tier 3 completely stops it.

Incidentally, this effect is a huge reason for the current duration of Joy -- stopping the need for food and drink altogether for longer periods of time would be strong indeed. As it is, I think you can make it last for roughly 10 minutes by topping up from time to time.
