Advice for getting food early in game?

Thanks for any tips. I have not taken down a downer yet, not sure what is supposed to happen there.

Food is very scarce in the game but in the Garden District there is rotten food, just make sure you have pills to cure your food poisoning ;)

Literally just go into every house, search everything. Just keep searching as much as possible. You'll find enough neximide pills to cover for even rotten food. There might random generated stuff in your area that can net you awesome food too. Such as the mines mines mines quests, where you dig for war rations.

Or the log and mushroom quest, that nets you some good food too.

I thought it was bugged, maybe I just got a bad generation. I should also report that it can bug out lol. The couple was never there for me, and mushrooms never spawned either. I was really hoping for the mushrooms too.

The whole game and quest generation is buggy.
... did you do this quest at night? 'pretty sure you're supposed to.

Couple and shrooms spawned two times for me but the shrooms were only counted at picked up the first time.

BTW, don't eat right when you're prompted. Do it after you're under 50% hunger, or there's a good chance you'll waste ressources (you can't go over 100%).
Same with drinking.
The penalties are really manageable.

I found just doing a lap of the outside of the 1st island netted me enough food from the berry bushes to last a while. They also seem to regrow after a few days.
