They cut Hell, for crying out loud.
1) They didn't go as far as they should have (and could have, easily) with the graphics, reusing a lot of old textures and models, no flashlight shadows, no reflections. On and on, It's just underwhelming, especially considering the capabilities of UE3.
Yes, overall, it looks more up to date than Black, but with the little amount of effort they put into it, it feels pointless.
2) The base game has only HALF of the content of what Black gives you, and they are charging a TON of money for it.
3) DLC mania
4) some questionable enemy/level shuffles. First off, the levels are all out of sequence now and they added some enemies to areas that don't make any sense, thematically.
Why? That is a stupid useless change, though partly because they didn't provide us all the content in the base game.
Overall, I've found the remake to be something that probably should have stayed on the cutting room floor, until someone had the skills and money and passion to do it proper.
The idea is fantastic, just not well executed.
As it stands, Black is still the one and only Painkiller game to own.
(I do like the Soul Catcher weapon though. That was a neat addition in HD)
Does anyone still play Black online? I'm thinking that would be a good time.
Hell and Damnation cut out more than half the maps and sold them separately as DLC. The new DLC maps do look pretty good though and some have been added on but overall Painkiller Black is more worth it because it's got all the levels. Plus why not start your Painkiller experience from the very beginning? Painkiller H&D made it too easy by giving you the OP soul catcher right at the start, the levels are also in the wrong order too and the secrets have changed too. Also, alot of the music has been jumbled up or replaced with tasteless crap. The original soundtrack is where it's at, so play Painkiller Black.
After beating Painkiller Black, i reccommend getting Painkiller Overdose. It's a mod of the original Painkiller that became a licenced sequal, it does have a few issues but it adds some cool new levels and weapons such as the evil eye/screamer which is like a demonic head which can shoot lasers out of it's eye and scream at enemies to kill them. Great fun but there are a few issues, particularly saving issues.
After finishing those three, only then should you consider Painkiller Hell and Damnation.
As for the other Painkiller games:
Ressurrection
Redemption
Reccuring Evil
AVOID THESE!!!
The BLACK EDIT. Is well worth the money.
