cant find my friends server on lan

A few of my friends all bought the HL 2 deathmatch to play at work. Well i cant join them. i'm running my windows 8 laptop and it won't find them when i try to hoast they say the server doesn't respond. I'm wondering what my options are to play. i have turned off all the firewalls and everything. any ideas?

luckily enough we have permission to do it when our emails are caught up. the other two can see and play together I cant get on their server and i get the server error when i'm trying to host

I was gonna say the same as ade...you are lucky. I'm surprised that work pc's can handle it...thats cool

port forward didnt work on my firewall (comodo) i uninstalled it and had to put in the server IP address directly

if it didn't work, u must've done something wrong, there's plenty of tutorials out there for you to try once you realize having a firewall is the least you can do to protect ur pc
