It seems like its just one server. The "ColdCommunity" Roleplaying server. I join and after about 30 secs to 3 mins, I crash to desktop.
1) Verify game cache
2) Make sure you have cl_downloadfilter all
3) Delete the "download" folder in hl2mp/ (Know that you will have to re-download all the custom server-sided content you have downloaded from servers ever since you installed the game, so it might be better if you make a backup first)
4) If none of the above worked, you could either ask the admins if they have any other way(s) of fixing this and if not (Or if they didnt work), blame their side for horrible hosting/management, which I did.
It's a thing in HL2DM because that's where roleplay is actually from before it went to GMOD and got newer/better versions. :p
Currenlty on our own server we experiance the following client crashes (and this is how we dealt with them) :
- Linux (and possibly OSX) players crash when they see singleplayer models (Think about Breen, Barney, Kleiner etc) due to errors in the model files. Currently we do not yet have a solution for this, someone would need to find or make fixed versions of the models. We still have more searching to do in the singleplayer so perhaps i find them soon for now these models are disabled as player choosable models to provide a more stable server experiance for Unix players.
- Maps crashing the client, less likely on cold because roleplay servers often opt for one optimized map that takes them days to optimize and compile. While we take consistent crashers out of the list there are a few maps that are sometimes crashing certain players. Sometimes this is the client not understanding the entity's in the map properly causing a "Saw this but expected this" crash. Some other maps we noticed players crash when mass teleporter, yet there is only one map where this happens so the exact cause is beyond me.
- IFrames causing crashes, this is a lot more stable since 2 updates ago where the game switched on the steam overlay html system rather then its own built in one. Still its far from perfect (Some things even got worse with the steam overlay system) and could cause instability. Its mostly related to very advanced HTML5 or plugins like Flash. Avoid using the radio and see if that helps. For us we like to offer multiple options, so there are radio stations that require flash and possibly cause less stability if players preffer this. But we did do heavy optimization when desiging the soundcloud system that got publically released on sourcemod. So using the soundcloud plugin you should not experiance issues.
- Crashing on disconnect or joining after joining a different server. This behavior started many updates ago, since its seemingly unsolvable on the server side we always recommend just restarting the game if it crashes and joining the server you where last in. It should be a lot more stable from there.
Almost all of the above crashes i listed are very rare, and i am currently not aware of any other crash reasons that causes our players to crash. If you are on Windows you might want to get in touch with the owner of Cold for further assistance. If you are on Linux however the first thing i listed is very likely as roleplay servers often have custom models based off the singleplayer games eigther as NPC or as player model. You would do best to play there on a windows machine if at all possible.
Hope it helps.
Is there a fix for this available yet? I play on SoCal #1 and they recently added those singleplayer models as playable characters which I suspect is causing my crashes.
Here is my console.log file from when I connected to the server to when I crashed.
