I can't find any model of the Alienware 18 with a 3D display option, are you sure it's the case for yours ?
In any case, you can probably stream it to your 3Dtv, and that should do the trick.
The M18x page[www.dell.com] of dell says this :
But doesn't mention playing with 3D vision directly on the laptop's screen.
I guess I will have to buy a 3D TV.
Assuredly there won't be any problem or lowering of performance. My optimal settings is: 2715 x 1527

There will be a performance drop. I'm sure your rig can handle it, but there will be a drop. I run 3D on high on a 780m and I get 35-40 fps with dips to 25 on big scenes.
I'll get flamed for saying this, but I played in 2D after I beat the game and didn't care for the higher FPS on this game (seemed too fast/rushed). I liked the slower frames... for this game only I might add. I hate to use the word, but "cinematic" hit the nail on the head here. Just my opinion.
Sorry to dig out an old thread, but I'm very, *very* confused about setting up 3D... I don't know what to do, so I'm seeking for your help.
My rig is the following:
My Graphic Card is a nVidia GeForce GTX 980
In terms of displays, I have two:
- A standard LG non-3D monitor
- A 3D Capable video projector using active shutter technology (the Espon EH-TW7200)
My LG monitor is my primary, the videoprojector is secondary. The displays are duplicated, not extended.
I'm a little bit confused about what I'm supposed to do..
- first of all, the 3D mode in Trine: what should I choose? I guess side by side? or Line-interlaced?
- prior to launching the game, should I disable my LG monitor and only use the video projector? (Win+P shortcut then select "Second Screen Only")
- I read only HDMI cables from 1.4 can support 3D. Is it true? If so, is there a way to know which version of HDMI my current cable is?
Last time I tried, I tried on PS4 with Trine 2 and had no luck: the "3D" option was greyed out, no matter what I did...
I hope you guys could help a newbie like me on the subject, as I'm really excited to test this masterpiece in 3D. I'd gladlby conjure for you a Heart-Shaped box with my wizard :)
[Edit]:
Okay I managed to get this working by doing more research. So in case anyone's interested:
- got to select the "side by side" setting for my particuliar case
- 3D will work fine with both display on
- apparently the "cables" have not an HDMI version, the devices connected to have.
In fact, my video projector was lost, I had to force the 3D rendering (Side by Side) by specifying it instead of setting the mode to "Auto".
Also in case anyone's interested, it works like a charm through multi (3D-compatible) devices, like in my case:
- PC, PS4 and Rasplex plugged to a 3-input HDMI switch
- HDMI switch output directed to a 2-output HDMI splitter
- Videoprojector and TV plugged to the HDMI splitter's out
