Playing in 3D - Help?
How?

When I had a PS3 and a 3D TV, no secret. If the game supported 3D, all I had to do is choose 3D, put the glasses on and bingo.

How does it work with computer games?

Do my laptop need to be special just like the TVs?

I play on an Alienware 18, specs below:

CPU: 2.9GHz Intel Core i7-4910MQ (quad-core, 8MB cache, up to 3.9GHz with Turbo Boost)
Graphics: 2x Nvidia GeForce GTX 880M (16GB GDDR5 RAM); Intel HD Graphics 4600
RAM: 16GB DDR3L (2x 8GB at 1600MHz)

Can anybody give a light for this layman?

Hi,
I can't find any model of the Alienware 18 with a 3D display option, are you sure it's the case for yours ?
In any case, you can probably stream it to your 3Dtv, and that should do the trick.

The M18x page[www.dell.com] of dell says this :
Enjoy intense 3D gaming by connecting to a compatible 3D TV via HDMI 1.4 or ditch the wires entirely. With optional Wireless HD you can wirelessly blast 3D or Full HD games to any 3D-ready device.
But doesn't mention playing with 3D vision directly on the laptop's screen.

Thank you very much. This clarified everything.

I guess I will have to buy a 3D TV.

Assuredly there won't be any problem or lowering of performance. My optimal settings is: 2715 x 1527

Stereo 3D works by rendering different image to each eye. Basically it double the load for GPU. You can approximate it by running the game with 2xSSAA, though that's not totally accurate.

This game is fantastic in 3D. However, getting 3D to work is a challenge. If you do get a 3D TV, you should be able to send interlaced 3D from trine, and it'll work without any problem. nVidia 3D VISION may not work on your laptop at all, and will definitely not work without owning nVidia 3D VISION usb or wireless glasses - even though you wouldn't be using those glasses with your TV.
Sorry to tell you the 18 doesn't have 3D. The only reason I refuse to buy one to date. The 17" models have NVIDIA 3D.

There will be a performance drop. I'm sure your rig can handle it, but there will be a drop. I run 3D on high on a 780m and I get 35-40 fps with dips to 25 on big scenes.

I'll get flamed for saying this, but I played in 2D after I beat the game and didn't care for the higher FPS on this game (seemed too fast/rushed). I liked the slower frames... for this game only I might add. I hate to use the word, but "cinematic" hit the nail on the head here. Just my opinion.

Hi Lads,

Sorry to dig out an old thread, but I'm very, *very* confused about setting up 3D... I don't know what to do, so I'm seeking for your help.

My rig is the following:
My Graphic Card is a nVidia GeForce GTX 980
In terms of displays, I have two:
- A standard LG non-3D monitor
- A 3D Capable video projector using active shutter technology (the Espon EH-TW7200)

My LG monitor is my primary, the videoprojector is secondary. The displays are duplicated, not extended.

I'm a little bit confused about what I'm supposed to do..
- first of all, the 3D mode in Trine: what should I choose? I guess side by side? or Line-interlaced?
- prior to launching the game, should I disable my LG monitor and only use the video projector? (Win+P shortcut then select "Second Screen Only")
- I read only HDMI cables from 1.4 can support 3D. Is it true? If so, is there a way to know which version of HDMI my current cable is?

Last time I tried, I tried on PS4 with Trine 2 and had no luck: the "3D" option was greyed out, no matter what I did...

I hope you guys could help a newbie like me on the subject, as I'm really excited to test this masterpiece in 3D. I'd gladlby conjure for you a Heart-Shaped box with my wizard :)

[Edit]:
Okay I managed to get this working by doing more research. So in case anyone's interested:
- got to select the "side by side" setting for my particuliar case
- 3D will work fine with both display on
- apparently the "cables" have not an HDMI version, the devices connected to have.

In fact, my video projector was lost, I had to force the 3D rendering (Side by Side) by specifying it instead of setting the mode to "Auto".

Also in case anyone's interested, it works like a charm through multi (3D-compatible) devices, like in my case:
- PC, PS4 and Rasplex plugged to a 3-input HDMI switch
- HDMI switch output directed to a 2-output HDMI splitter
- Videoprojector and TV plugged to the HDMI splitter's out
