Voice Commands not working? Click here!
There Came an Echo's voice recognition systems can be very, very accurate, but it does rely on some proper conditions to get it working well. Here are some things to look out for if you're not having much success:

Step 1) Ensure your microphone is plugged in before starting There Came an Echo. The bar on the Voice Calibration screen should be moving when you speak! If it's plugged in but nothing is happening, go to Recording Device settings in Windows and ensure your microphone is set as the Default Device.

Step 2) Ensure you have not enabled push-to-talk! It's currently easy to forget you've done this. If it's enabled, you have to hold down spacebar.

Step 3) If your input volume slider is at 100% but you still aren't getting near the top of the bar, try once again heading over to Recording Device settings in Windows, going into your microphone's properties, and enabling Microsoft Boost to +10 or +20 dB.

Step 4) If you have an accent, flip through the Language setting in the Options menu to see if there's an acoustic model and accent for you! You may also feel more comfortable playing in another language.

Step 5) If you feel that the commands aren't working as well in battle situations, remember to speak smoothly and calmly. Most importantly, do *not* attempt to string together consecutive commands without giving a pause...the recognition system only evaluates a phrase after around 600 ms of silence, and it can't handle two complete commands as one. Make sure you leave a little pause before every command.

Step 6) If you're still having trouble and no commands are being recognized at all, it's possible the VoiceCore component has crashed. In this situation, please look for a file called VoiceCoreErrorLog.txt in the folder Steam/steamapps/common/ThereCameAnEcho, and post its contents here! We might be able to figure out what's wrong and help you.

Thanks for your patience. Getting this system to work was a remarkable technical challenge, and we appreciate you guys even giving a shot in the first place. We'll do what we can to make sure your experience is as smooth as possible! <3

Edit: The Razer Kraken 7.1 and the Logitech G35 and possibly a few other Logitech sets (please let us know if one isn't working for you!) are currently incompatible with TCAE for weird reasons, too. Please use a different headset if possible.

I'll mark that down in the "good" category for now. = D

I want the game to recognize [name] -> [on my mark] -> [command]. I almost gave up on the misson where you had to snipe two people at once since this wasn't working. I'm happy I didn't, I really enjoyed the game. But at that time I was close to thinking the voice recongintion was broken.
Feep  [desarrollador] 3 MAR 2015 a las 12:31 p. m.
The more combinations there are, the lower the quality of the voice recognition. We found that a lot of people wanted on my mark up front, and a lot in the back, but very few in the middle like that...adding that would increase the number of possible commands by a full 50%.

We have to make numerous tough decisions regarding which words, phrases, and orders to keep. Our apologies for that.

Hi Mike, have you tried the following?

Disable push-to-talk. Exit and restart the game, go straight into the audio calibration and see whether it recognises "Loud and clear".

Does it make a 'beep..... bop' when you press and release push-to-talk? (When it's enabled, of course.) A few times, mine didn't, still haven't worked out the cause of it since it just started working again.

If you're getting the beeps, try it (with PTT enabled) then exit and check the contents of steamapps\common\There Came an Echo\ThereCameanEcho_Data. Are you seeing something like this:
(Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) Sending - holdtrigger (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) Data Received: !Failed - Confidence Level 0.6027287 (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) Sending - releasetrigger (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49)
In particular, are there "!Failed" lines? -- if so, it means it's picking you up but can't work out what you said. If you just see "Sending - holdtrigger" / "Sending - releasetrigger" with nothing in between, it means (I think) that the recognition isn't even running.

Bear in mind this is just based on troubleshooting for my own problems, so maybe your problem is something completely different.

Literally just started the game and the voice core keeps crashing every time I run it.

in mission 0

System.IO.IOException: The handle is invalid.

at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String maybeFullPath)
at System.Console.set_OutputEncoding(Encoding value)
at VoiceCore.Program.Main(String[] args)

This is the error log. I'm running on win 7 64 bit.
I'm not a native speaker but I tested my mic with the built in windows speech recognition software and it's definitely not me. I can dictate to my computer with around 90% accuracy without any previous calibration. Assistance would be appreciated.
EDIT: I'm using the English US setting. I've been told I have a "neutral" accent but personal experience has shown me that speech recognition software works best when I set it to EN(US).

This is a strange error we've never seen before. Do you have any out of the ordinary firewalls or antivirus programs running? Also, certain headset drivers have been causing issues...if you have another headset, I would recommend trying it out as well.

Weird.
Danisimo 5 MAR 2015 a las 10:31 a. m.
I only have microsoft security essentials and the firewall is off.

I'm using a cheap Philips headset that doesn't come with any custom drivers(like the fancy gaming ones) but so far I've been using it about a year with no issues I find it very strange that it might conflict with the game. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything else I can use unless old HTC earplugs count. :D

Hello Feep, I have been trying to get this game to recognize me. It recognizes the fact that I am using the microphone (the bar moves), but it does not recognize the fact that I am saying Loud and Clear.

This is the error that I am getting in the error log:

in mission 0

@Atsou: It looks like the required speech recognizers were not properly installed when Steam went through the auto-instllation process. You can try reinstalling the game, or you could manually install them. They're found at steam/steamapps/common/ThereCameAnEcho/AcousticModels.

@Danisimo: If you could try the weird earbuds just to test "loud and clear", that would help ascertain if the problem is indeed stemming from the headset drivers themselves. We *have* had limited issues with driver support that we're trying to work through.

We did find this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830297, but it seems that they want you to contact them directly for a hotfix? This is an extremely strange error. If there are any irregular settings you've taken in your Windows installation or configuration, you should let us know to help us track down a solution.

Hi Sayonara

Thanks for your help !

- Yes it makes the beep...bop' sounds, but i dont think its being acknoweldged with PTT on or not. Should something happen when 'Lound and clear' is succesfully heared? ie, a 'we read you' or the icon changes red etc? im starting to feel a bit stupid saying this word over and over again with no idea what should happen ;D

- I tried what you mentioned and found a .txt files called 'output_log' in the folder you mentioned, but nothing about fails etc showed up - is this where i should be looking? i cant find any other .txt files in the whole games directory, so i just assumed it was this one. I have no idea what any of it means, should i paste the data in here?

- Overall it seem that the program can hear me, but maybe cant understand what im saying at all - ive tried mucking around with my headset settings , - ie, db levels - but to no avail

Any ideas?

Thanks again for your help guys.

Mike

If "loud and clear" is recognized, the little LED lights should turn blue and you should get a nice sound effect confirming the recognition.

Like Sayonara mentioned, I recommend grabbing the output_log.txt and sending it my way, to iridium@playiridium.com! I can hopefully assist more from there.

I have this problem. It won't recognize my voice at all eventhough the bar is moving everytime I talk.
so here is my error log.
