Subtle difference in Jefferson's dialogue in Episode 2 (spoilers)
After Kate runs away from Jefferson you have a dialogue with him, where at some point Max will bring up Rachel Amber.

Max: "I just don't want Kate Marsh to become the next Rachel Amber..."
Jefferson: "Rachel Amber? What does she have to do with Kate?"
Max: "With all her 'Missing Persons' posters around, it's hard not to think of her..."

But Jefferson's next line apparently differs depending on your playthrough. In my own playthrough, and most of the other ones I've seen, he answers this:

Jefferson: "Rachel was nothing like Kate"

I thought this was a peculiar answer. It almost seemed like Jefferson was insulted that Max would compare Kate to Rachel. It also implies Jefferson knew Rachel personally. Which Stella did hint at in Episode 1.

However, at least one playthrough I've seen had a different answer from Jefferson. Instead of saying Rachel was nothing like Kate, he answered this:

Jefferson: "I miss Rachel too. But think about yourself, Max"

Does anyone know what actually determines Jefferson's answer? It's a minor difference, but I'm guessing it's there for a reason. I tried choosing different answers during the conversation, but those don't seem to change his response.

Maybe it has to do with whether you talk to Jefferson, or he stops you before you enter class.

Interestingly there are two other options as well. You can not talk to him at all by rewinding inside the classroom, or even get a one liner from Kate if you rewind in the middle of them and try to enter the class. ( "Oh I see, I'm not important anymore-" and then you get the "Nobody cares about me! Nobody!" Scene that you see in the "previously on life is strange" montage)

Also somewhat off topic, but it's a little weird that when you accuse Jefferson, he only says that you answer Kate's calls if you told Kate to go to the police.

I didn't notice that. Interesting.

Interesting. I didn't realize you could skip the conversation altogether. Rewinding the conversation and interrupting the conversation was also an interesting option, I didn't think of that while playing the game.

Do you mean Jefferson says Max did answer Kate's calls, or didn't answers them? Perhaps Kate told him that?

What I also noticed, is that after you accuse Jefferson, he eventually says "I understand. There are bigger things at stake than me. The life of a young girl for one.". Now what I found odd, is that he apparently says that even when Kate is dead. Was he talking about Rachel? The camera also focuses on David glaring at Jefferson after he says that, as if he suspects something.

Even if you did answer Kate's phone call, and you did tell Jefferson that you talked to Kate, he only says that you answered her calls if you told her to go to the police.

As for the "life of a young girl" line I believe that's just him saying that Kate's suicide is more important than the Everyday Heroes Contest, and his job.

The difference is whether or not you reported Nathan in Episode 1. He says "Rachel was nothing like Kate" if you hid the truth, and he says "I miss Rachel too" if you reported Nathan.

interesting,I only got "Rachel was nothing like Kate".And I'm curious why his reaction was different due to max reporting nathan or not

Probably because he says "think about yourself...[the principal and I don't believe you about Nathan]."

I blamed him for pushing kate to the limit since I wanted to keep a low profile on david and nathan to later screw them big time without them noticing and in episode 3 he talks ♥♥♥♥ about max with victoria
