On my first playthrough, I sided with Chloe. On my second one, I sided with David, just to see what happens. In the end, I think that the second decision was the better one, but that was not obvious when I had to make my decision, not even after that within rewind time.
Back to LiS, the scene near the end in the Dark Room shows that he actually loves Chloe. Don't mistake me, I don't want to defend him more than it is due, but I want to be fair all things considered. And ultimately, he doesn't hate Chloe, he just doesn't know how to handle difficult teenagers (or teenagers in general, or pretty much any other people who are not in the army).
OK, now I replayed that scene where you have to side with Chloe or David. Both of them are being jerks there. In that situation, given what Max just found out, it's perfectly reasonable for her to side with Chloe instead of David. I think that scene is meant to played like this: side with Chloe, then see how you just ruined Joyce's marriage, and potentially rewind and change your mind. That would be so much in-character for Max, as well as just siding with Chloe and be done with it, but not siding with David at first. When you side with David, Max even says that she does it for Joyce's sake.

This is not even remotely supported by the game's narrative, which ultimately shows that David does indeed care about Chloe, Joyce etc considering he's the one who rescues Max from the bunker.
