Character name hidden meanings and analysis? (SPOILERS for everything)
Ever since I saw someone mention that the name "Warren" means guard/protector (or more literally "fence" or "enclosure") I wondered if the names Dontnod chose for their characters could have hidden meaning. They like to include hints and symbolism (one of the first thing Mr. Jefferson ever says references being in a dark corner in desperation or whatever) that pay off later on. Another possible example of deliberate symbolism that makes sense later is when Chloe is shot in the bathroom in episode 1, the bullet hole is on the forehead part of her skull t-shirt, and she ends up getting shot in the forehead by Mr. Jefferson. And more obviously, in episode 4, Max wears a shirt with an image of a Death's-head Hawkmoth, an omen of death.

I may be reading way too much into this, or maybe not. Regardless it's fun to speculate. Onto the names, then:

MAXINE: Could be derived from the feminine form of the old Latin name "Maximus", meaning "great" or "greatest". This is a straightforward interpretation, as she's the protagonist/hero of the story and has a special power that she uses to save people. However, there's another possibility that I'll tie in with the next name.

CHLOE: Ancient Greek, one of the titles of Demeter, goddess of nature and plants. Specifically, "chloe" refers to the young new foliage and green shoots of growing plants. At first, this might not seem like a good fit for Chloe's personality. But it may not be about who she is, but rather who she's becoming. I say this because of her relationship with Max, and the fact that Maxine can also be the feminine form of Maxwell, from a Scottish surname meaning "Mac's stream/river". I may just be grasping at straws here, but think of it this way: Max's friendship and love is helping Chloe to grow and mature as a person and move away from the bitter, angry girl who wants to reject the world before it can reject her, as she fears it will. Max is the "water" nourishing the new growth of Chloe's personality. Think I'm crazy? There's a very literal parallel with the fact that there's a potted plant in Max's room that she can water...and if she waters it wrong, it dies.

RACHEL: Hebrew name meaning "ewe", a female sheep. Not exactly a deer, but it could be a reference to sacrifice, especially if it turns out she was slaughtered as an offering to some supernatural force empowering the Prescotts.

WARREN: "guard", "protector", or more literally the term for an enclosure to contain animals/livestock. Warren has risked himself to protect Max several times throughout the game, and wants more information from her about what's going on and what she's involved in.

NATHAN: A Hebrew name meaning "he gave". Could be a reference to sacrifice, maybe a plan to use Nathan as the fall guy if the Prescott/Jefferson murders are exposed.

KATE: From Katherine, "pure, blessed, virginal". No explanation needed.

IDK, I'm bored. Just some thoughts I had. I don't think last names are significant, I think at least some of them are just references to other media (Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye, another teen drama/coming of age story, Price maybe a reference to Vincent Price, especially with the Twilight Zone license plate you also see in the game, devs are clearly fans of mystery/horror series). What do you guys think?

EDIT: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I just remembered that Max literally "waters" Chloe at the beginning of episode 4 when her throat is dry. "Drink up, buttercup."

Nice you researched the meaning of the names. Names are never given by chance, not in games, neither in reality... just sayin'.

In Latin, Mark means Hammer. A bit more exploration also referenced mallets and hammers for smithing weapons. Pretty fitting.

David, while not having a direct Latin meaning, is Beloved pretty much everywhere. Interesting...

Victoria is victory, or triumphant. Again, pretty fitting.

Joyce is happy, apparently.

Interesting stuff :D
